I am a huge, huge GSP fan -- but I think that this is for sure the most dangerous fight in the division for GSP. I know a lot of people won't agree with me on this, but that's how I feel. Georges is for sure the better fighter, the more skilled martial artist, and the more accomplished guy, but styles make fights. For me, Askren is stylistically the worst match up in the division for Georges, followed by Hendricks at a very distant second. For those who have followed Askren's collegiate career, he is a nasty, beastly, insanely skilled wrestler -- probably one of the best to ever enter MMA. Like Chael said, there are only a few things from wrestling that really translates to MMA, but Askren is amazing at all of those things. His funk style really allows his scrambling ability to second to none, and he has done a great job at training heavily in submission grappling to craft an etremely effective anti-BJJ game when on the ground.

This man would have by far the greatest wrestling pedigree GSP has ever faced -- not even close (at least until GSP's fight with Hendricks...and even then, Askren is most definitely still the more recognized guy internationally.) In GSP's first fight with Koscheck he outwrestled him pretty soundly, but Kos was not expecting GSP to take him down and has stated over and over again that he thought he would strike with him. In the second fight, we did not see this same result. GSP landed more takedowns, but he also shot for more...Kos really did not shoot on Georges except for once or twice, he was determined to outstrike him and KO him on the feet (Kos has always had somewhat of a poor fight IQ.) When GSP was able to get Kos down, he had no luck whatsoever holding him down, whereas the time when Kos took him down he held Georges down the entire last minute of the round until the bell rang, GSP did not get back up to his feet on his own.

Askren is ten times the wrestler Kos is. It is really not even comparable -- Kos won an NCAA Division I Championship, but that was way back in 2001...over ten years ago. For those of you that have wrestled, while you will always retain some skills, the further removed from your wrestling career you are the less competent you are going to be in that area. I think we had a good example of this when Brock, a more accomplished wrestler, was not able to keep Cain down when he took him down, but when Cain, a less accomplished wrestler but closer to his wrestling prime, was able to hold Brock down when he took him down and pop up and scramble. Askren went straight from his run as an amateur wrestler into MMA, and that really, really counts for something.

GSP has never faced a wrestler of Askren's caliber. And that alone doesn't mean that Askren would beat GSP, and I hope that Georges would go out and destroy him, but I think that the amount of problems Ben poses for GSP is far more than the average person wants to admit. Georges has done so much more...but damn it if Askren doesn't have the style to frustrate any welterweight on the planet.

Silverball - GSP would box Askren for 25 minutes. Easy prediction.

He would also take him down whenever he felt like it.

Why couldn't he take down Koscheck whenever he felt like it? Or even Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit, for that matter?

He did take those guys down whenever he felt like it. LOL @ using Condit as an example. GSP took him down on 8 of 9 attempts.

He certainly did not take Kos down whenever he wanted. 4 out of 9 on takedown attempts, was never able to keep Kos down for more than a few seconds. Kos went 1 for 4. Condit, my bad, I mis-remembered. Nick stopped like 5 or 6 of his takedowns so that's certainly not "whenever he felt like it". Fitch stuffed a couple and even got one of his own.

Askren is 2x NCAA Champion, 4x finalist, 4x All-American, #3 all-time Div I pins list, made the Olympic team, gold in Pan-Ams and US Championship. It's absurd to think GSP would "take him down whenever he felt like it" or that Askren would not get a takedown of his own.

I'm with my best friend orcus on this one.

I think it's highly likely Askren could take down GSP. Be interesting to see as well because I can't even remember the last time I saw GSP fighting off his back.

That said if GSP mixes up his striking and shots he may perplex Askren a bit more than the average opponent.

Maybe the wrestling negates and we get a crappy kickboxing match which GSP dominates. Phone Post
IIRC, he was on his back briefly in both Koscheck fights, and in the Alves fight after being reversed. Only ones I remember from his current championship run Phone Post
Yeah he was on his back against Kos but I don't really think he displayed any "fighting" from his back. He basically just quickly got back up.

But thanks for the reminder :) Phone Post

Can't wait for Saunders to get redemption on Lima then shut this curly headed fuck up. He couldn't beat GSP, or Hendricks, Diaz, Condit, Ellenberger. Wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't beat a current top 10 UFC WW

LOL. LMAO. Essentially 0% chance of beating GSP.

100 times of 100, GSP wins.

Now Hendricks has a chance, Condit and Rory. That is about it.

Maia? No. Ellenberger? No. But they certainly have much much greater probability that Askren.

Nobody wants to see Askren fight, so I hope he never gets into the UFC, and certainly that they don't risk him becoming ww champion, can you imagine haha.. PPV suicide.

Askren would get wrecked by the top 10 WW in the UFC. They are light years ahead of his MMA game. Yes he can wrestle but he walks forward like a zombie and takes hits. Top UFC WW have phenomenal striking and it's the best/deepest division for wrestling in MMA. Lets see him fight Kos, Hendricks, Condit, Rory, Ellenberger... Hell, might as well add a retired BJ to that list... young Eric Silva too. They'd all put a whole in his head while he tried to close the distance.

I'm not talking shit, I'm making an observation based off of everyone's fights over YEARS. Askren would take SEVERE damage from top UFC WW with his current skill set an style. His striking needs to improve and his MMA takedown set ups need to DRASTICALLY improve if he hopes to get in clean on the top guys. Phone Post

lol at the nonfight knowing Askren haters.

Askren would take down GSP/Diaz/etc/etc and win the control/position game against ANY ww in the division

Nobody at the WW division will be able to stop Ben's TDs, and once you're on the ground with Ben, there is little chance you're gonna get back up.

It's simple...if you fight Ben, you're gonna get taken down and beat down. Every fighter knows his game and NOBODY can stop it.

I would bet 100k that GSP wrecks Askren. 5 rounds of domination.

When GSP is like 50 years old...Askren may well have a chance.

...and you would loose that bet

Winning fights for grapplers/bjj guys is about closing the distance, taking the fight to the ground, gaining and maintaining position, and beating your opponent down until he is physically exhausted and mentally broken (see Ben's last fight).

In Ben's last fight he showed tremendous improvment in his g&p game. He was punching from good posture/position and with power compared to his previous fights.

Gaining and maintaining position wins fights. Positional dominance round after round impacts a fighters psyche and takes away any realistic hope for victory.

Position/control is Ben's game; he's spent a lifetime becoming the best in the world at it; he's only going to get better and better; and GSP will suffer a beatdown if they fight.

Ben's gonna keep winning, and if Dana has any balls he will make this fight happen. Personally I don't see Dana making Ben a big offer after Ben's contract expires. Dana will make up some bullshit excuse about Ben being boring in order to save his UFC poster boys from being BEAT DOWN by a Bellator champ

You're all posting in a troll thread brothers. Askren can't even setup a troll properly jesus.

The only thing he achieved was wrecking eleven dan the baker and francis the paperboy.. Lombard was the same.. big mouths.. a large number of W facing off tomato cans and gassed like a sorry sore granny dick once arrived in UFC.

My god I actually would PAY a ppv just to see Askren getting ragdolled by an old matt serra in some casino near las vegas, nevada.
