"Every sport goes through cycles as old stars fade and new stars develop," Cuban said. "Just when things seem down and pay-per-view numbers slip, some new storyline and a new name will emerge, and everyone will forget the downtime. MMA is fundamentally strong.

"A great example of how strong it is are the regionals. Promoters like XFC, Lion Fight, Legacy and MFC are not only stable, they are growing and working from very sound financial footing. That's something that you didn't see in the past and proof of just how strong the sport has become."

And while entertainment programming will factor heavily into AXS TV's future plans, Cuban said the channel will remain committed to MMA as it grows its subscriber base with cable and satellite providers across the country.

"We continue to grow," Cuban said. "We are now past 40 million subscribers. When you consider that we are not offered in standard definition anywhere but DISH Network, it means our penetration is growing quickly. If you are on Time Warner Cable, Cox or Cablevision, call them. Tweet to them. Make it clear to them that MMA fans deserve AXS TV.

So Underground, is Mark Cuban right? Is this supposed 'downtime' just cyclical and will big PPV numbers return if the right story or person brings more attention to the sport?

Seems to be sort of how it is. Even known guys like Diaz finally getting the big fights act as a catalyst.

I like that Mark mentions XFC at the top of the list. AXS does alot for the sport, and I believe someone that has had that much success.

Watch me make my XFC ring announcing debut on April 19th! Phone Post

Cuban is as eccentric, unconventional, creative, insane and brilliant as they come.

He's a man of passion and calculated decisions but he also loves to hang his ball out there if he believes in something. He conducts his businesses based on what he believes. He's not a bullshitter. Can he be wrong yes, but you better believe he gives 100% into every business venture he gets on board with. As MMA fans we are really lucky to have someone like him on board pushing the sport.

I believe in the great product of MMA and I know Mark Cuban has the resources and drive to make great things happen with mediocre products, so when he has a great product like MMA, he will do great things. Phone Post

KingofBJJ - I remember when Cuban was just a young punk with a lot of many thanks to the 1990s internet boom (then bust). Coincidentally he ranks lower than White on the top 50 powerful people in Sports.

They both rank almost last.
He's still successful, and is one of the most fan-friendly suits in our sport. Phone Post
