Anyone else notice him throwing 12-6 elbows to the backside of johnson?

Aren't those illegal or is it only to the head that's illegal??

Shitty rule regardless, but I didn't see any spine shots. Looked to me like he was aiming for organs from the back.

The rule is that 12-6 elbows (ceiling to floor) are illegal. With that being said, if a referee feels that the elbow was closer to 11-5 or 1-7 then they may choose not to call it. I try to make this clear in rules meetings to the fighters that I am refereeing. So long as it is not straight up and straight down, so long as they arc it even in the slightest, I'll have no problem with it. That way I'm still enforcing the written rule, even if I don't agree with it.

I did not see the bout in question, but I know that Kevin Mulhall is a great referee who has been around a long time. He likes to let the fighters fight and stay out of it as much as possible.

The spine is an illegal target from the beltline to the base of the skull, where it the foul area expands to cover the back of the head. I'll try to watch it later.

I've seen refs say that the 12-6 is illegal only to the head from mount. Plenty of times.

That being said, this confusion amongst refs for the interpretation of the unified rules is annoying. Phone Post
