The UG’s Jack Brown had the opportunity to quickly catch up with Sarah Kaufman in advance of her next fight.  Kaufman is a veteran bantamweight, who holds a record of 15-2, and she remains one of the top pound-for-pound WMMA fighters in the world.

Her next fight will be this Friday, April 5th, on the main card of Invicta FC 5.  This will be Kaufman’s Invicta debut, and her opponent will be Leslie Smith.  Kaufman’s last fight was a first round submission loss to Ronda Rousey for the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight championship last July.  Kaufman is eager for revenge, and she looks to begin her journey back to the top this Friday.  Please enjoy the conversation below.

Jack Brown: What have you thought about Invicta as a promotion thus far, and what fighters would you be most interested in seeing if you were just watching IFC5 as a fan on Friday night?

Sarah Kaufman: Invicta is a very professional organization.  They run seamlessly and treat the fighters extremely well.  I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with them.  It's really hard to pick just one fight, but I'm really excited for the Barb Honchak vs. Vanessa Porto title fight.

JB: How do you view your opponent, Leslie Smith, and how have you prepared for this matchup?

SK: Leslie Smith is an extremely game opponent.  She's going to come out to fight, and it's going to bring out the best in me.  By that I mean I'm looking for a KO!  My team at ZUMA Martial Arts really pushed me this fight camp (like always), and I'm feeling more prepared than ever to get in the cage.

JB:  You are one of the top fighters in the world in your weight class.  Who, if anyone, would you currently rank ahead of you?

SK: On paper, I would rank Ronda Rousey ahead of me since I just lost to her.  But I know that I will be claiming that number one spot again!

JB: You have fought many of the best WMMA fighters out there.  What rematches would you be most interested in?

SK: 100% I want Ronda Rousey.  I will continue to put on exciting fights and beat my way back to the top.  Women (and the 135lb division) in MMA are in a great place right now.  We have the UFC, Invicta, Bellator, and other organizations all putting on some amazing fights.  I want to continue to be a part of that growth and push the boundaries even further.  Miesha Tate was also fun to punch in the face.  I'd love to get that opportunity again, but this time, finish her before the final bell!

JB: Last question, Sarah, and thank you so much for taking the time to do this right before your fight.  Who has been the best that you have fought, and who have you been at your best against when you fought them?

SK: This one's hard because I go into every fight thinking that my opponent is going to be the best I've ever fought.  And I try to be a better version of myself with every entrance into the cage.  But if I had to pick, maybe I'd say Alexis Davis, since we got WMMA Fight of the Year in 2012, and the fight against Liz Carmouche.

LOL at her answer to who her best opponent was.

"Who has been the best that you've fought?"

"Some chick that went 15 minutes with me and NOT the chick who made me tap out in under a minute".

The hate (read: jealousy) for Rhonda is so strong in women's MMA right now.

Here's an odd question. Most men that hit the upper echelon of MMA end up leaving smaller camps and end up at larger institutions with basically the best of the best. Happens in judo in Canada. If you want to be the best you pretty much have to go to Montreal.

With Ronda roving around training with the Diaz brothers and all these other high level camps, can Sarah catch up staying on the island? I'm sure she has lots of great people there but is it possible she could be even more of a threat moving to a camp with more depth?
