It was a message that White wasted no time delivering at the UFC on Fuel TV 9 post-fight press conference (watch it here), which took place inside Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

"The media didn't really do it to us this time, but some of the fans did," White said. "It drives me crazy when people start talking shit about a card that hasn't even happened yet. You know, people start saying, 'this card sucks' and this and that because one guy fell off a card. This was a card full of talented people, while there were talks of canceling the card and stupid shit like that."

The free cards are always the best. The one's they want you to pay for always end up being pretty darn boring. Maybe they should just show all UFC events free.

It was a bad card with pretty much no name value.  This isn't an opinion, it's a fact.  There's no arguing that people are stupid for prejudging and blah blah blah.  It's a fact that it was extremely weak and that's what people were saying.

That's what they're always saying when they complain in such a way.

But go ahead and insult your customers.  Who am I to stop you.

the Young Dana that was part of the early Zuffa, where they wanted to have the best fight the best, would have laughed at this card and said we'll never put on a garbage card like that. but now its about the money and as many cards/countries as possible.

In terms of name value it was subpar at best, obviously lack of name value won't stop me from enjoying a card but I'm just saying when something clearly fails to meet the standards of the consumer, why are the complaints not justified? Why is it just mindless shit talk?

Dana makes a good point.  We have no way of knowing ahead of time if a card is going to suck because he added Jon Fitch and Clay Guida to the card, or if he added mostly obscure fighters, so we should not complain ahead of time.  We also have no way of knowing the card sucks if the talent on the fight card is less famous than a Bellator weekly tournament fight card.  I've seen Strikefarce with better cards and names.  Cut the bullshit Dana.  If a lot of people are complaining about a particular card because there isn't anyone on it who anyone recognizes, then stop making cards like that.  I think Dana needs to keep it real and admit that card was thrown together as though some regional Toughman promoter put it together at a Casino the night before.

Obviously Dana you are paying attention to some of our comments.  Please stop wasting my time with your Fitch and Guida bullshit.  I stopped buying your events because it got to a point where I was just watching leg humping for $60.  If we don't like your bullshit cards, and we spend $60 on ppv and it turns out to be bullshit, it is not like you are handing back refunds, or that we have a customer service phone # to call and voice complaints.  If we don't like something, we are not coming to you telling you we don't like it, give us our money back.  Instead, you are giving us shit cards with and also PPV events full of leg humping, you take our money, waste our time getting us to watch the events, then you tell us not to complain because we are tired of it happening and can now predict when it is gonna happen because of our PhD's in bullshit cards from our experience.  A lot of us are not ignorant.  We do know when cards are not worth buying, or will likely be a waste of time.

The fans are not predicting that the fights will suck and bitching about that, the fans are complaining at the lack of big names and fights that shake up divisions.

Sure the fights were great, but most of them caried very little implications in their respective divisions.

Its like paying Madona concert prices to see a decent local band. The concert can kick ass, but its not a big name like Madona and doesnt have that 'OMG im so excited for this' feel.

That being said, only the people going to the show live should be in a position to complain about prices. This particular card was on TV. It had a fuckton of prelims for free on Facebook/Youtube/Sportsnet. Those that dont have Fuel or an alternative all found a free stream somewhere (that's fucking illegal -Dana).

PPV cards that are watered down in names are one thing. Television cards are something else. This card was fine for what it was.

Here is the name value and division implications of the card:

Heavyweight:

Light Heavyweight: 10th ranked Mousasi. No implications on the division (not their fault, it was supposed to be #10 vs #2)

Middleweight:

Welterweight

Lightweight:

Featherweight:

Bantamweight: 5th ranked Brad Picket  vs 9th Ranked Mike Easton... on the main card

Flyweight:

Girls:

If this was a PPV, then we would have reason to complain. This is a TV card and I am fine with that.

I agree with Dana. I don't need a big name to enjoy a card.

Big names don't guarantee good fights.

E.g. GSP. Phone Post 3.0

Agree, it was free and UFC did the best they could.

Don't know about the Swedes who bought tickets, though.

another no big name card thats the problem. De Fries and the main event. Mousasi has been fighting terrible for years even look against Jardine so it wasnt just the late replacment that was the problem.

I agree that you should not prejudge a card. A lot of time, what doesn't look so great on paper turns out to be full of epic and/or really fun fights.

But you can't get mad at customers for not getting excited about cards with few big names, or even name recognition. And this being the internet age...things are always said in the most negative fashion as possible because everybody loves hyperbole.

A trait I'd think ol' DFW would be pretty familiar with...

Boxing actually follows a better path today in terms of how HBO/Showtime select fights.

If they feel a fight is not worthy of being aired; they don't pay for it.

Which is why GGG-Ishida was a PPV.

GGG is a HBO future stud but they thought it was an awful bout so it hit PPV.

GGG will be back on HBO in June versus a better opponent.

There have been plenty of fights put together that HBO/Showtime have said no to.

The UFC needs to do the same in terms of what they put on air.

If you want to tell me this Fuel card featured any stars, I have a challenge for you.

Let me take each of those fighters into LAX for a day or walk around NYC for an afternoon and let me know how many people will pick them out in a crowd and know their names.

I guarantee the entire Fuel card could have walked into any building anywhere and not been stopped for pictures by a soul.

There was zero star power on the card and that was even before the main event changing injury to Gustaffson.

If they want to build Gus or Weidman into stars they need to not book them on Fuel anyhow.

Maybe use Fuel for these sort of cards without names and use them to get young guys and new fighters some fights under their belts.

Just treat them as C shows and we will appreciate them for that.

Dana tries to tell us they are all A cards and it just isn't true. Phone Post

Today was headlined by Gegard Mousasi who couldn't even draw viewers to Showtime and UFC 161 features an Eddie Wineland main event.

If say we definitely have an issue and that issue is that the UFC is not creating stars or developing names that fans recognize and will pay to see.

With guys being cut so often no one gets the chance to earn recognition as the roster is a revolving door of unknown foreign fighters who are highly skilled but not sufficiently hyped.

This is where keeping a Jon Fitch becomes valuable.

People know the name.

The more known names on a card the "better" casual fans perceive it to be which means they view it as worth buying which translates into more buys.

You need the casual fans.

The ones who couldn't wait until Brock, Chuck, Randy, Tito, Hughes or BJ fought no matter how past their prime they were.

The UFC has lots of great fighters but too much time is spent marketing Dana White and the UFC brand.

You need stars.

You need names that make fans pop because they can't wait to see those guys fight.

The UFC would be best advised to use tv shows and free fights to build up guys and create familiar names so that when it's time to put them on PPV that the fans follow. Phone Post

So the main event fell apart. Now let's look at the co-main: Ryan Couture spent the round running from Pearson and managed to win the round by running. People complain about GSP but he doesn't run.

The only point he should be making is that the card is free so you can't really complain. I still watched it.
