Sometimes our sport is seen from the outside as violent, or even barbaric, but at the end of the day every MMA fighter is just a regular person with emotions and a life outside the cage. It's nice to be reminded of that, such as we we're on Saturday night when UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson proposed to his girlfriend in the Octagon following his fight with Gilbert Melendez. It was just one of those moments that made everyone feel good, and despite fighting another man in the cage for 25 minutes, Henderson was as nervous as any man would be. He spoke with ESPN about the proposal and how it transpired:

Henderson, who has been fighting out of Phoenix since 2006, said he's been planning the proposal for awhile. He and Magana have been dating for about three years.

"I was thinking of ideas to make it special. I thought about doing something in public, like after a fight," he said. "Then, I realized that I would need to be concentrating on the fight, and I was on a fence. I bought the ring, and I didn't tell anybody about this. I then decided to man up and ask."

What if you hadn't won?

"I don't know. I wasn't sure I was going to ask her or not. I know you still get interviewed if you don't win when you're the defending champion. But I don't know what I would have done."

Did you hear the pro-Melendez crowd booing?

"I heard afterward about the crowd. I was so nervous just asking. I didn't hear a single boo. I just heard her say 'Yes.'"

good for him, hopefully for our sake he doesn't take too much time off with all the wedding business.

I hope the man gets a nice bonus.

He has delivered on these FOX cards, and even though i'm not into his whole religious spiel he is a great ambassador for the sport.

he's fairly well spoken, cheerful guy that seems to have a positive outlook on life.

I am sure he can afford to hire a wedding planner to take care of everything for him.

I was sold on the guy when I saw his story on one of the Countdown specials from a year or so ago. Came from nothing, ended up successful and does everything for his mom after she supported him.

Just a nice thing to see. He's a great ambassador for the sport.

Voted up for demonstrating that adults can be fans of people whose beliefs they disagree with.

Agreed. He's been part of some close fights about which we can argue all day long, but he is a class act. Being positive is not a weakness.

Just curious, anyone aware of any marriage proposals in the boxing ring?

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems on average, an mma fanbase is more receptive to these reality "bites". Which actually bodes well for the sport, I think, in this age of reality entertainment... Phone Post 3.0

As someone that was at the event live, it was embarassing that the crowd didn't have the decency to stop booing the guy after they realized he was proposing to his lady.

Cool romantic gesture on his part.

Good for him. He's been a great champion and always presents himself well. Don't know why people are giving him shit for this. It may have been a little corny, but he did what he wanted.

What you see with this guy is exactly what you get and that's an awesome dude. Very genuine. I loved that he proposed in that fashion. It's their moment, no one else's. I wish them all the best.
