Jon Jones successfully defended his lightheavyweight title against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 and did it by using Sonnen's own strategy against him: take the guy down and beat him up. Jones who was the rangier fighter and a much better striker, could have likely kept Sonnen at distance and inflicted damage on the feet, but out wrestling Sonnen was a key part of the strategy head coach Greg Jackson revealed to Sherdog Radio yesterday:

On why Jones wanted to take Sonnen down: “You always have to remember one of the dictums of our strategy is you don’t necessarily stay away from a guy’s strength. If you feel you can do better at it, you can head on attack it. If you take away what your opponent is good at, if that is no longer an option and your opponent hasn’t layered their game plan so there’s no real plan B, where do you go psychologically?

It’s always a good idea if you know your guy can outdo the other guy at their strength to charge right at that strength and basically just break them mentally. You want to make sure you’ve taken away their safety zone [and] you’ve taken away what they’re supposed to do. That can have a very, very powerful psychological effect on people.”

Sonnen himself was suprised that Jones was able to take him down, not just once, but three times in the first round on his way to a TKO stoppage. Sonnen admitted on last night's episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV that being taken down did effect him, so kudos to Jackson for the strategy:

He’s big, he’s strong and he’s got the wing span of a radioactive condor. I knew he’d take me down, but I never thought that he could take me down repeatedly. That was a surprise. And the fact that he tried so quickly, I was thrown off a little.”

I guess this is proof he concedes Diaz's superiority in the standup game to Condit

It sure helps if your fighter towers over the opponent and has a significant reach advantage.

Not trying to take anything away from Jones' win - okay, I guess I am - but when he tries that strategy with a HW wrestler, then I'll be impressed.

Wrong. Total opposite.
The shorter, more compact individual is at an advantage wrestling wise. Tall/higher center of gravity is at a disadvantage.

I'm sure it's difficult to find training partners that can accurately mimic an Anderson or Jones, as they're each one-of-a-kind (unique, unorthodox); however, I'll bet it's pretty easy to find guys that are similar to Sonnen (well conditioned wrestler).

That makes all the difference in the world when you're trying to prepare for a fight.

This. Not only is Jones a good wrestler, but he also had a significant size advantage.

Not necessarily. Jones was able to get an ankle pick without bending over.

Think about that for a minute.

This is the kind of thing GSP does, minus the finishing.

Where the hell did you get this? You new to the sport, or simply not understand weight divisions? Each division has a weight limit, so no one has a size advantage. That's the whole point of weight classes. Holy shit dude, wake the hell up.

That's true, and I'm always the guy to point that out. What Jones has is a freak body-type. Weight distribution. All torso and arm length. Chael wasn't lying when he said he grabbed him and was surprised by the size. It's because people Chael normally fights, don't have twig legs with an enlarged trunk.

Every body type provides difficulty when wrestling. Tall lanky guys can be very tricky to deal with and they don't get taller or lankier than Jon... Phone Post

"Each division has a weight limit, so no one has a size advantage."

What the fuck? Jones is 6'4" with an 84.5" reach, along with some long-ass legs, like Dhalsim from Street Fighter. Compared to Sonnen, who is 6'1" with a 73.5", that's a difference of 11 inches.

Now, how the fuck was Sonnen supposed to prepare for a fighter of Jones' size and reach caliber? Still no size advantage?

How the fuck was Ben Askren supposed to prepare for a fighter of Dan Hornbuckle's size and reach caliber?

Askren is 5'10" with a 71" reach, and Hornbuckle is 6'2" with a 83.5" reach. That's a difference of the 13 inches. Askren stood no chance, and neither will any of Hornbuckle's future challengers for his Bellator WW title.
