Pettis logic: "I couldn't wait until August for the winner of Benson/Gilbert, so I took a fight against Aldo in August instead."

It doesn't make much sense to give a title fight to someone that has said he won't defend it if he wins.

My first thought when I read it. Phone Post

Where are you people getting he's not going to defend it from?? How do you misinterpret the word temporary as meaning he's immediately moving back to LW win or lose after this?

For all we know he could be planning to stay at FW for a few years or more defending the belt and then move back up. Phone Post 3.0

To the people who don't think Pettis deserved a shot at 155 title your dumb. He just demolished Cerrone & Lauzon who were top 5 at the time. Devastating 1st round finishes. He already has beat the current champ and his loss to Guida was horrible to watch but he hardly got "BEAT", but lay and prayed.

His decision to fight Aldo who is #2 PFP is a huge challenge and the rewards will be great if he succeeds. Regarding those who say it's a "bad career move" taking the biggest fights possible vs. the best competition is bad? No matter what the fight is going to be fireworks and will be good for his career.

Ya'll musta forgot... Chael Sonnen lost at Middleweight to then get an immediate Title shot at lightheavyweight. The UFC is in the business of selling PPV's and Anthony is one of the guys who can sell a fight based on the fight which is more valuable than a fight that has to be PR hyped for months to get attention.

I like the fight and I want to see it. I just don't see the point of giving a title fight to someone that keeps saying they don't want to stay in the division. Now if he clarified and said winning the title would keep him there to defend that's something else. He was definitely in line for a LW shot, and I have not problem with him deserving a FW shot. But only if he sticks around to defend it if he wins.

There are a lot of clueless people posting in this thread.

If only we knew then what we know now, our decisions would be almost perfect. When he called out Aldo, in early February, he didn't know the fight would take until August to put together. Everybody in the public was surprised at the date, so why don't you think Pettis was too? He doesn't have most control over it. It's incumbent upon what the UFC and Aldo want too. Also, he was concerned he wouldn't be next in line after Melendez got his first shot. 2 rematches had delayed title shots he was promised before, and he expressed concern Aldo would all of a sudden decide he wanted to finally move up and challenge for the 155 lb title, being another guy who moved ahead of him. So he took his sure shot at 145, and took control over his own destiny of Aldo moving up ahead of him at 155.

Those who think Pettis is forced to fight at 145 after this, get real. Fighters can compete in whatever division they feel comfortable. The organization doesn't have control over that. They only have control over whether fighters get title shots. But if Pettis moved back to 155, how big of a joke would Bendo be as a champ if he fought different guys? He already has the stains of the should be Edgar loss and 50/50 vs. Melendez. Now he's not fighting a guy out there who: a. beat him semi recently, b. is on a 4-fight win streak which includes multiple demolitions, and c. beat the #4 p4p. Bendo would be a massive joke, paper champ.

So here are the most likely scenarios if Pettis wins: a. he moves up immediately to win titles in 2 divisons, or b. the UFC is forced to offer Pettis a shitload of money to stay at 145 and continue defending (is it worth it to them over making a marketable Bendo/Pettis rematch? They only need to keep up the charade that the FW title fight means something until it happens). Either way that's a favorable situation.

It's pretty simple. If Pettis wins, then it was a great move. If he loses, it was a terrible move. You're not being honest or realistic if you think either scenario could reasonably happen. Both fighters are a threat to the other. We'll have to wait until August 3rd to see how it plays out.

I forgot to mention - who the hell is Pettis holding up in the FW divison?

KZ, coming off a long layoff and only beating Hominick and Poirier?

Lamas? Few want to see him fight for the title. That fight would sell horribly. And the guy eeked out the Hioki win in unimpressive fashion, then was losing until Koch fell.

Swanson, who lost to Lamas during his streak?

Mendes, after getting KO'ed by Aldo, then beating Yaotzin Meza, Cody McKenzie, and Darrin Elkins?

Edgar, getting another rematch?

He is holding back nobody. The FW contenders need that July 6th card to build themselves as viable challengers.
