UFC welterweight Dan Hardy was recently a guest on the Joe Rogan experience where he talked, amongst other things, about his recent medical troubles. Hardy was diagnosed with Wolff Parkinson White pattern, which is an issue where he has two heartbeats. Hardy was sidelined by the UFC until he can be medically cleared and has the option of a surgery, but as he explained to Rogan, he sees no reason to complete the surgery:

"It's called Wolff Parkinson Heart Syndrome. But, I don't have the syndrome because I don't have the symptoms, I only have the pattern which means I have a second heart beat, but it's never caused a problem.

Basically, in your heart you have the basic pacemaker you have a bunch of cells that create electrical impulses that keep the heart beating. And what WPW people have are other cells in other parts of the heart that do the same thing. And usually what they do is they go in and, it's called an ablation. They go into the femoral artery and they can burn them out and stuff. But, people have that done when they have symptoms. When they have palpitations, the dizziness; some people have panic attacks and stuff. I've never had anything, nothing at all.

So, what they're telling me at the moment, I mean, I got to go back and get some more tests done for a second opinion with a different person, but the way I understand it right now is that If I want to continue fighting, to get cleared I have to have the ablation. But because I've never had any symptoms and I'm perfectly fine, I don't see the point in letting someone burning my shit. I mean, if it was causing a problem and that's the solution then I would have it done, but it's not."

Ya, fuck having heart surgery for something that isn't causing any symptoms or problems.  Although, is that likely to change as he ages?

Serious surgery is seriuos.

He said you have a 0.6% chance of anything happening over the age of 25.

Its stupid, I hope they let him fight again...LOVE Hardy!

He said if it was causing a problem, he would do it. Phone Post 3.0

I actually had WPW. I never had any symptoms, just like Dan. It was first found on a routine EKG. I never took it seriously because I felt perfectly fine. Then one day out of the blue I stood up and everything went white and my ears started ringing. I fell back down to my chair and regained my sight after about 15 seconds. After that my heart went nuts, beating extremely fast. It got so fast that eventually it went into ventricular fibrillation. I was rushed to a hospital and was eventually stabilized. Two days later I was scheduled for an ablation. If left untreated there is that chance that WPW can be fatal. I hope Dan puts his health above all else and seriously considers taking care of this before it causes him any real problems. Phone Post 3.0

I understand his concern, but it seems he either gets the surgery and continues to fight, or ignores it and retires.

How was this not noticed until recently?

people with wpw can be asymptomatic until they have a very malignant arrythmia and drop dead or pass out on the road.

the problem is not aberrant pacemaker cells, it's aberrant conduction pathways that allow for passage of impulses between the heart atria and ventricles that allow bypass of the normal pathways and cause harmful arrythmias to occur.

but please, it's not open heart surgery. it's procedure that is done with simple sedation. if he truly has WPW, he should fix it so that he doesn't drop dead.

cheesesteak - Heart problem talks always makes me feel weird and paranoid.

Yeah...my Dad told me some stuff about his open heart surgery from 10 years ago that I never knew had happened (like he was put on a heart and lung machine while they performed the operation - which they call a 'dead heart' operation). I thought I was going to have a heart attack hearing him describe all the things that went wrong. Somehow he was oblivious to the fact that I was grabbing my chest and rocking back and forth while telling me this.
