Following an exclusive interview with Spike TV president Kevin Kay, SI.com's Loretta Hunt is reporting that Bellator MMA is moving from Thursday to Friday nights from 9-11 p.m. ET starting Sept. 13.

The move came via a process of elimination:
Monday: Monday Night Raw
Tuesday: Original programming
Wednesday: UFC programming on FOX Sports 1
Thursday: TNA believed better than Bellator vs. NFL
Friday: Bellator MMA

Despite the California-based promotion’s tangible growth this past season, Kay said the NFL’s return this fall precipitated an obligatory move for Bellator.

TNA Impact Wrestling, which previously served as Bellator’s lead-in, has already been moved back into Thursday’s 9 p.m. slot, where Kay said pro wrestling’s dedicated audience will hold up better against sport’s greatest juggernaut. Kay said the strength of WWE’s Monday Night Raw and Spike’s Tuesday night original programming eliminated an early-week slot for Bellator, which left Wednesdays or Fridays.

Fox Sports 1, the rebranded Speed channel, announced in May that it would feature UFC programming on Wednesdays.

“I don’t want to see Bellator going head to head with the UFC,” said Kay. “I don’t think that makes any sense for fans. No matter who would win in that scenario, you don’t want to not give the fans the choice to watch both.”

TUF is different than a live fight card (even TUF live).

ESPN has had Friday Night Fights for years and Showtime does ShoBox on Friday nights as well so it's not like combat sports can't work on Fridays.

Seems like it will be a better option than having it on from 11-1am after TNA Wresting on Thursdays and it's better than going against TUF on Wednesdays and UFC on Fox/UFC PPVs on Saturdays.

Dumb move IMO.

To much to do on Friday Nights, so I'll likely miss quite a few unfortunately. Phone Post

My question would be are they accepting/anticipating lower ratings on Friday night? If so, I would be curious to know how they can afford some of the bigger name signings lately? In the case of Rampage does anyone know if TNA ears some of his salary or Spike TV in general? Phone Post 3.0

This is good for me. they might get less ratings, but i was getting killed by all those late nights, and 11-1 thursday would have been even worse.

Fridays were terrible for UFC and Bellator when they were on, yes it wont be as bad as MTV2 cause Spike will get higher ratings but I dont see this as a long term move.

You figure there is no way they increase ratings from season 8, if they are lucky they hold steady at 700-800k a week but most likely you will see a drop off in ratings.

I'm all for this, Thursday night at 10 PM was inconvenient. I usually went to bed and recorded the 2nd half of the card on my DVR.

If they thought they could compete with UFC, they'd go for it. "Not putting the fans" through that is just a poor excuse from facing reality. Phone Post 3.0

Fridays worked for boxing because of an older audience. MMA's younger audience is not going to be captured on Friday nights.

This. I also think they arent sure what UFC on FS1 will do in terms of ratings.

If UFC is only doing like a mill for TUF or fight nights or even under that I think they will move to Weds in season 10 figuring they can do similar numbers.

I figured they would move to Friday, they will have TNA and fight master the night before yo promote them on Friday, plus its better for the people who complained about the 10pm start time, 9-11 is a good time

Plus they can sell more tickets on Friday night compared to during the week

Spike just killed off Bellator.

TUF ratings on a Friday for example:

"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 1 ratings: 947,000 viewers
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 2 ratings: 872,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 3 ratings: 775,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 4 ratings: 1.1 million
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 5 ratings: 624,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 6 ratings: 811,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 7 ratings: 676,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 8 ratings: 1.1 million
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 9 ratings: 921,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 10 ratings: 643,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 11 ratings: 804,000
"The Ultimate Fighter 16" episode No. 12 ratings: 678,000

I don't think they killed it per se, but the night of choice was clearly Tuesdays not Fridays. Sure, Tuesdays have "original programming" but Spike has little enough of that that Wednesdays and Mondays were wide open for placing their few active successful homegrown shows there (Ink Masters, Bar Rescue, and um... did I mention Ink Masters?). Putting Bellator on Fridays isn't a death sentence but as of right now they are neither a flagship show nor as important as TNA Impact.

those ratings wouldnt be that terrible for Bellator tbh.

also, you really think they would jsut kill their own promotion? i think if the ratings bomb raelly bad on fridays, they will just move to another night the following season. hardly killing off bellator imo.
