In an interview with TJ De Santis on the Sherdog Network's “Beatdown” Radio, Jacob Volkmann reports that before his fight with Lyle Beerbohm at WSoF 3 on Friday, he passed out and had a seizure in his hotel room. Volkmann, a chiropracter, did a self assesment, and identified the cause as weight cutting. In the end, Volkman made weight, and defeated Beerbohm via unanimous decision.

“The maid knocks on my door and keeps on knocking, and I [thought], ‘I’d better not get up too fast.’ So I got up and walked toward the door, and by the time I got my hand on the door, I blacked out,” said Volkman. “Next thing I remember, I was shaking on the floor, having seizures.”

“I banged my head, and I must have hit my back on the door handle. I didn’t tell anybody, because I didn’t want them to say I couldn’t fight because I just had a seizure. I had bills to pay, so I really didn’t have a choice.”

“Mentally and physically, I felt fine. I didn’t feel cloudy. I kind of did a self-analysis based on my medical background. I just wanted to make sure that my cognitive was there and my mental state was up to par. I was mentally able to fight, still. The thing about chiropractic education is that the first two years are the same as an M.D.’s education. You just branch off after two years.

“It was a byproduct of being dehydrated. I don’t think I need a CAT scan or [anything]. There’s nothing cloudy. My memory is fine. I don’t feel sluggish at all. I’m good to go.”

“Ideally, [I would fight again] in three months, but their August and September cards are full, at least that’s what [matchmaker] Ali [Aziz] told me. So, hopefully  in October. If somebody drops out, I’ll try to get a short-notice fight. I would love to get back in there in two months if I could, but we’ll see.”

Damn, that must have been scary. I've never had a seizure but its terrifying to think about not being in control of your body like that.

Can't believe that he manned up and still fought. Phone Post 3.0

Dear Jakob,

I don't know if you read the UG but you are a chiropractor not a neurologist. You need to see one right away. If you had a seizure triggered by interrupted sleep, it's likely you could have epilepsy.

As a life long epileptic, the circumstances you describe sound almost exactly like my own. Please schedule an EEG and MRI as soon as possible. A CT scan will tell you nothing.
Good luck and I sincerely hope I'm wrong. Phone Post

I'm sure he's ok. Phone Post 3.0

People who have seizures don't remember the day much less having the seizure. People who have pseudo seizures tell everyone who will listen how they had a seizure. It's amazing how you people will believe anything someone says. Phone Post 3.0

I also have epilepsy, I know he felt fine but that doesn't matter. He really should go to a doctor. Thank god nothing happened to him for his health and if something happened it probably would have fallen on wsof hands. Phone Post 3.0

Even if he doesn't want to see a doctor I'm sure he will have to now that he reported it. No promoter will/should let him fight until he does. Phone Post 3.0

I don't see the benefit of reporting this. Is there a prefight medical question that he would've had to falsify in order to fight? Phone Post

The benefit now is he may or may not get to fight again. A doctor may save his life

Not to sound too dramatic.

I know when I've had them I "come to" and feel just fine but I know I have to take a minute. The body/brain does some crazy ass shit when it's happening Phone Post 3.0

They're the same if you're talking freshman and sophomore years taking those english lit and PE requirements but there is no similarity at all in chiropractic education and real medical education.

Probably shouldn't be bragging about that. If you have seizure you lose your license until it is controlled or something like that. I had a friend who had a seizure he lost his license for a while. Sucked. Hope he finds out what is going on and gets better. Phone Post 3.0
