As some of you might know, I'm a brown belt under Master de la Riva, and I recently gave a seminar on the de la Riva guard, here in the UK.

So, now I'm sharing a little bit of that seminar with you. In part 1 we're starting with the basics of the de la Riva guard, how to maintain and hold the de la Riva hook:

David Morcegao shows how to maintain and hold the de la Riva guard.

Thanks for posting. In my limited experience open guard retention seems to be mostly left to learning through experience rather than taught. Little details like this make a world of difference.

I agree, which is why i chose to kick off my seminar with these little details before getting into the "meat" of it

Getting to a position, and retention of positions are the most fundamental parts, but often get forgotten about and things are taught with an assumption that you've just magically landed in a position, and that the opponent is now just waiting for you to pull off whatever technique you fancy.

Great vid!!! Yeah, lots of neglected details. Thanks for posting.

Congrats on your sponsorship too, saw lots of Bull Terrier in Japan and they seemed to have a good product.
