Recently the topic of fighter pay has been discused in depth amongst fans and in the MMA media. Early this week, UFC President Dana White hinted at removing bonuses in exchange for higher power for lower tier fights. Today in the UFC 162 media scrum he expanded on his idea and the whole controversy around fighter pay:

“The guys who are complaining about this are the guys that don’t matter,” White continued. “Now that might sound f****** mean, and harsh, and ‘Why would nobody matter? Everybody matters.’ We’re in this f****** society now where everybody should win a trophy. No, everybody doesn’t win a f***** trophy.”

“The guys who stand out and the guys who deserve bonuses, the guys who make it exciting, the guys who rise to the top are the guys who deserve the money.”

“If you’re the guy who stands out, you’re the guy who people want to see again. You’re the guy who people want to spend money for. You’re the guy who people want to buy tickets, pay-per-views, and stay home on Saturday night [to see],” White said.

White stated that what it comes down to is everyone wanting more money. He further explained that when it comes down to it, everyone should be after the American dream, adding how he built the UFC to what it is today – the fastest growing sport in the world. But, White added it seems these days not everybody is willing to do what it takes to get there.

“You should want to be f****** Anderson Silva. You should want to be Jon Jones. You should aspire to be the best. But what happens is, especially in sports, in any professional sport where you’re an athlete, that day of reckoning comes where you either are that guy, or you’re not.”

What does any of what White said have to do with some guys in the UFC, the biggest stage in MMA, not being paid enough to make a living?  Classic Dana distraction technique.

Umm even a 3rd string football player who won't see the field makes more $ then a UFC fighter getting his face smashed up or chocked out. Win or lose

I think the UFC can do better than 6k a fight at that rate a fighter needs to win 6 times a year to be at the same level of pay as a CNA at a retirement home

Just my 2 cents Phone Post 3.0

Silva makes a lot of money, but if you compare him to Money Mayweather he is a poor man.

Mayweather will make more money in one fight than Silva might make his entire career, but Dana will never admit that.

Harsh for sure but he has a point.

Not everyone is going to make it big in every profession. Now let me state the lower guys should be getting paid more on paper, meaning show money. No hypothetical money or if you win money. More flat out base money so these guys know when they sign exactly what they are getting (not just what if). Start them off with 1-2 fight contracts. Perform (not just win) and get a new and better deal. Fair for everyone.

Now back to what Dana said. Should everyone who makes it to the UFC get rich? No. Is fighting on the Facebook or prelims the big show, not really. The big show is main card and up. Those are the fights that people pay to view (minus free cards obviously). Those fighters should be paid well. I hate how everyone says UFC is the big show. It's not that cut and dry. If your not thrilling the crowd on the main card why should you expect high pay? Why do so many believe just because people risk their bodies that automatically means they should get paid a ton? Should every musician, sprinter, gymnast, or any non "9-5" person get rich because they dedicated their life to a particular thing? While it's great in fantasy that isn't how the real world works. Not everyone is going to "make it". If the crowd is there to see you. You're probably not going to make much. That's just the truth. Phone Post 3.0

Classic pit lower level fighters against those higher up on the card. . .

Of course, this ignores the reality that ALL levels are griping.  Fitch, Jackson, Kennedy, Couture, Quarry, to name a few that have spoken in public.

Hey Dana, how do you expect to attract the best athletes, when the pay structure is so low. You really think the most athletic guys from college are gonna want to go fight for 10grand?

Even the mid tear guys aren't making enough money to be able to train properly. That's why you have situations like you do, where you have a champion, and contenders who aren't even near the level of the champ, because they can't afford to train professionally. There should be Jon Jones type prospects appearing every year, but why don't you see it? Because you will never attract the best athletes when your paying dirt

A 3 billion dollar company, and you got fighters who have to work part time jobs in order to survive. How on earth are these guys ever going to be prospects, when they can only afford to train part time? Dana's responses to fighter pay are just pathetic. As usual he flys off the handle unprofessionally and says you should want Anderson silva money? Well of course they do dummy!! But they ain't ever gonna get there training at the local mma gym. God, how incredibly ignorant is Dana?

Do the Lakers pay Kobe 30 million a season and then try to sign guys at the end of the bench for 10 bucks an hour because they're not the players the fans came to see play? No, because the players have a collective bargaining agreement that ensures a fair ground floor for player salaries and requires teams to spend a minimum % of their revenue on their athletes. That's the standard for a real major league sports organization, so if UFC wants to be treated like one Dana needs to stop dissembling like a motherfucker and lead UFC toward a more mature compensation model that doesn't make them look like crooked pro wrestling promoters. He says they pay the performance bonuses "out of the kindness of our hearts" and then in the next breath claims those bonuses have to be cut if fighter pay is to be increased? Which one is it?
