25 years ago in 1988 WWF and NBC aired a friday night special entitled "The Main Event". The event was headlined by the Wrestlemania 3 rematch of Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant that saw Andre end Hogan's 4 year title reign in controversial fashion. 33 million viewers tuned into this wrestling program which is far and away the biggest audience to ever see wrestling at one given time.

That's a ratings. Damn.

Yes, they moved it to Monday night, IIRC, and renamed it.

There were not as many Chanel's back then. The Cosby show used to do between 30 to 40 million viewers. Can't compare the 80's to today. Phone Post

Considering their was only 15-20 channels tops (including cable) kinda obvious how easy it was to get viewers.

It's like looking at the views "BBC" when it was 1 of 4 channels available.

Marketspace and audience is bigger, yes, but you're also seeing a lot more quality programming.

Also, TIVO/PVRs and the Internet. Phone Post 3.0

I wish I made some kinda mention of making Sakara vs. Baroni happen for the fans now that the UFC shot calla was looking over here.

6 times the population of Ireland watched a fake wrestling match on US Television. Insane.

Look at the numbers Canelo and JM Marquez do on Mexican TV. Look at the Japanese tv ratings for either of those twin brother boxers. Look at the ratings for the Klits in central and Eastern Europe.

People will watch big fights in massive numbers Phone Post 3.0

UFC wont be pulling 30mil viewers anytime soon...  but if you're talking about a fight that would garner an incredible amount of mainstream attention, it would be Ronda Rousey.

Ronda Rousy is the fighter to put on Fox.

but long term, in order for the UFC to compete with the big team sports they will have to move to events that only feature one weight class.  right now it's too confusing for the casual fan to follow the sport.

Imagine if you were asked to watch one match from wimbledon, one match from the australian open, one match from dubai, etc... all consecutively on one 3 hour tennis program.  you wouldnt be able to follow the sport for very long.  You may watch some entertaining tennis matches but you wont be able to understand the relevance of each match.

This is exactly what Zuffa is doing when they place a 155lb fight following a 185lb fight which follows a 170lb fight which follows a 145lb fight.   None of the fights on a card are relavant to each other.

Until every fight on a card is relevant to each other the UFC will never be able to compete with the big team sports per territory.  The UFC will continue to burn through fans too fast because the casual fan cant follow the sport, connect the dots and keep up.

Ronda has been given as much mainstream attention as she's going to get right now.  The story of the first woman in the UFC has been done.

I really like it when they have a bunch of fights in the same weight class on the same card. It really sets up future fights (Edgar vs Swanson hopefully). Phone Post 3.0

With more limited viewing options like back then, and if the UFC was fake, they might be able to pull similar numbers if they scripted an epic re-match between two fighters, who were once like brothers, after one of them turned on the other in dramatic fashion during an interview while ripping off the other guy's shirt and gold chain.

"Andre, please no, this can't be happening, we're friends!"
