Anthony Pettis first fougth Benson Henderson for the final WEC lightweight title in a grueling back and forth five round decision, however, the only moment people remember is the 'Showtime' kick. Anthony Pettis jumped off the cage wall and landed a flush kick to Henderson that sent him to the mat, but Henderson's coach doesn't believe the kick was as spectacular as most think:

"It was a fluke," he said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "It's like getting caught with a punch. All the best fighters have lost, you know what I mean? How many times has Anderson Silva seen the Ryo Chonan heel hook? How many times is he going to see Chris Weidman catching him with that hook? If you're great, if you compete with the best people in the sport, you are going to have an unfortunate moment at some point. And they're going to replay it and talk about it, but it's just another moment. It’s one speck of time. There was 24 minutes and 59 seconds of that fight that still went on.

"The thing that I remember about the 'Showtime Kick' or whatever you want to call it, is that Ben got up and was on a single leg to finish the fight," he continued. "He was going to get that single. He was getting that takedown. It there's 15 more seconds, Anthony's on his back."

This quote kind of backs of Pettis' earlier sentiments of Bendo simply trying to win rounds.

That word gets thrown around way too much!!

fluke: A chance occurrence; an accident.

If he was throwing a left hook and landed the showtime kick then maybe that would be a fluke.

He executed something he consciously decide to do. Phone Post 3.0

He didn't mean fluke as in lucky. He was talking about recovering from all the hoopla surrounding it and was just comparing it to any other big strike or ko you get hit with. Everyone gets caught, it happens and you move on. Phone Post

This.

Him calling a kick that Pettis intentionally threw with the intent of landing it on Bendos chin a fluke is him talking out of his ass. Phone Post 3.0

I bet he'd been practicing and paitently waiting for the oppertunity to exicute that "fluke."   If it had been Crazy Horse I'd call it a fluke, but who else would just make that up in the moment and give it a try...?

How odd. Pettis seems to land a lot of flukes. Kick off the cage, knee of the cage, crazy cartwheel kicks, liver kicks. All a lot of *flukes* that pettis keeps landing. I think its called a "good striking game"

He tried to SPECTACULARLY finish the fight camp Bendo, there is NOTHING you can argue against trying to do that.

And he's landed showtime knees and elbows since then, stop trying to piss on someone who takes more risks, it's just a fact.

this, I have no doubt this is what will happen and Bendo fanboys will argue it was trying to "finish the fight"

He certainly didn't mean the kick was a "fluke" in the sense that Pettis didn't mean to do what he set out to do--which was land the kick exactly as he did. He meant that it was more of an anomaly--as the success of that kick would not necessarily be the same if tried 10 times.

Again, anomaly is what he meant, not fluke.

Henderson has never done this in a single fight of his career lol. He was extremely aggressive on the ground against Jim Miller and Nate Diaz but he's just going to try and hold Pettis down and do nothing from on top? Phone Post

This. If you throw something with bad intentions and it lands, no matter how wild, its no fluke. Knowing that Pettis trains those kicks AND the knee he hit on Cerrone (gif provided above) I think clearly illustrates that it was no fluke. Could he hit it again? Maybe, maybe not. The cat is kinda outta the bag now so I think Bendo would likely be keeping his hands up now and know what to look for but it wasnt some fluke shot. Just like Weidman's punch on Anderson. Just cause you catch someone fuckin around or sleeping on their defense doesnt make it lucky.

Bendo and Co learned point fighting from Edgar and his team.  Zuffa should have never given Frankie a rematch.

I think if Pettis starts getting the better of the standup yes I think he's not above doing that, and unless he's like GSP in the respect of having ZERO KO power I don't think he takes as many risks as people make him out to be taking.

That's just how I see it, GSP is worse but Bendo is becoming predictable with how he works Offensively.

And not that I am not accusing him of holding down in particular, but as an overall strategy I think his version of Safe against who he has fought has been what he uses, he hasn't had to fear a KO artist yet at all. He was faster than Nate, a better grappler than Jim, and just edged out Frankie in terms of the same skills, same with Melendez.

All championship fights are becoming "Why risk for a finish if point fighting is winning the fight", if one can't dominate immediately it turns into 5 rounds of the same C level kickboxing from guys with no KO power, if they have no KO power I don't see anything but headkicks as trying to finish the fight offensively, I'm not saying its the worse type of fight but it's not trying to finish it if you can't knock them out it's just a simple equation.

It's the Ironic knock  and downfall of the pedestal that "Well rounded MMA guys with no KO power" get put on as contenders when they edge it out standing, they by definition are point fighting unless looking for a sub.

and by all championship fights I mean those in divisions where a specialist isn't champ who prides himself on the finish at this point.

It may look more violent when Bendo point fights than GSP or even Frankie or Mighty Mouse, but it is no less in his safety zone because mentally he believes he is ahead and his corners take that as the important part of the fight, I;ve never heard anyone talk about "here's how you finish him or you should finish him" in a LW fight for quite a while, and why should they? THe UFC isn't gonna be there when their career is over, they owe nothing to anyone except earn what they can when they are there and they earn more by being champ pure and simple.
