Former UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin has become a member of the Las Vegas-based Central Christian Church, as detailed in this profile by Doug McMurdo of Nevada's Kingman Daily Miner.

Forrest Griffin never asked God for help before or during a fight.

Outside the cage, the former and now retired UFC lightweight champ did ask God to make him a better person and he prays to God when loved ones fall ill or when life offers up one of its many crises.

Steve Petrauschke, the lead pastor at Central Christian's Kingman campus, asked Griffin how he reconciled his faith in a loving God with his former profession, which required him to pummel an opponent - or get pummeled - in the violent sport of mixed martial arts.

"Fighting for me was fun," Griffin told an overflow crowd Sunday morning at Lee Williams High School, where the Kingman campus of Central Christian Church worships.

"Fighting didn't test my faith. It tested my mettle," said Griffin, pointing out that U.S. troops go to church.

The husband of Kingman native Jaime and father to two-year-old Ella, Griffin said he joined Central Christian Church at a point in his life when things were going well.

"I had the job I wanted, the woman I wanted, the home I wanted. Things were good and I wanted to walk to God. Eventually, we all go to God on our knees, but I walked to God, reached out and something took hold."

Griffin said his goal was always to win a fight. "In the beginning, a punch to the jaw was a wakeup call. At the end, it was a go to sleep call."

He's got cauliflower ears from fighting, his knees are shot and his memory isn't as sharp as it once was, said Griffin, but his faith is strong.

Parenthood has helped.

"You have to reprioritize your life when you have a kid," said Griffin. "It's not about you anymore, and honestly, I really like it when it's about me."

"You can't step away from parenting."

"I saw so many things in the world that are wrong. The Christian mission is to help others. I fail more than I succeed, but I know what God expects of me. Doing the right thing is usually the harder of two choices."

good for him, although idiots will try to talk shit here. As long as he does not become a blowhard there is zero wrong here and people need to respect that.

Funny how many people get religious around the time their children turn a certain age. That should wear off in about 18 or 20 years.

Forrest was very religious, for lack of a better word, when he was a kid as well.

He's been back at church for years...this isn't new.  I had conversations with Jaime mainly.  They've both been very involved, before Ella was born.  They have been very generous to their church as well.  I mean, amazingly and that's just what I know about.  Not only church, but he's done stuff for people you wouldn't believe.  I know of a few things, small things...one time around the holidays he was talking to the cashier at WalMart or somewhere and they were talking about getting all their shopping done.  She made a comment about having to go to KMart or to get her kids stuff off layaway.  He put an extra $100 when he paid.  I know it's small, but how cool is that?  There's lots of things like that I know he's done and does.  Dana talked about the food kitchen, writing check,etc...all while they had no idea who he was.

Forrest, even after his management said no, allowed me to keep Sprawl as his sponsor so I could get paid by them for 3 years.  He finally had to allow his management to do the deals.  He did a lot for me.  Hell, his wife saw my place when I'd just bought it and the walls were bare, etc.  She couldn't stand it and went out and bought pics, lamps, mirrors, rugs, curtains, etc and decorated my living room.

So easy for people to ridicule others to find comfort in religion . What's really funny is the people that I find of the most unhappy are usually the one who don't have faith or believe in religion but hey you SitBack and ridicule away Phone Post

Fair enough. My observation still stands, just apparently not applicable here.

Why is that really funny? Shouldn't you be witnessing to these folks instead of laughing at their forthcoming doom?

Don't encourage them to "witness", we can do without that tyvm. What they don't realize is that whether something makes you happy or not has zero bearing on it's truth value.

I didnt expect this with how negative and cynical his personality is, but hey maybe thats why he is back in the church.

I was like Griffin, cynical and negative, judged people a lot. However I snapped out of it on my own since I'm not religious.

Good for him, I just hope it doesn't turn him against gays. Phone Post 3.0
