Great interview on Maxim.com with Campbell McLaren the creator of the UFC:

Interesting to hear what his thoughts were before the first UFC fight ever took place

From what I understand, there was a team of 4 - Rorion Gracie, Campbell McLaren, Bob Meyrowitz and Art Davie

Great read(with a couple of nostalgia fight videos thrown in). Thanks, standupwarrior.

I'm surprised one of the haters was BJJ practitioner and life long martial artist Chuck Norris more than anything else said.

That might explain his hesitation to see TMA exposed.

No. Bob Meyrowitz had nothing to do with UFC 1. He was the owner of SEG, the company that purchased the UFC almost two years after Royce first stepped in the cage.

He is also associated with the worst years of UFC history.. the dark ages. I wouldn't call him an innovator. More like an unlucky investor.

It seems hard to believe now that the sport is so mainstream but it seemed as if well into the 2000's MMA/UFC was seen in the same light as pornography by most of the established martial arts world

I remember seeing the Machados on an episode of Walker, and i think he said he trained with the guy that taught them.
I'm skeptical about the context of Norris' disinterest. Perhaps it was the rule structure, or something to do with fighter safety.

Chuck didn't meet the Machados until after Royce had his UFC success. Not only that, but the Machados were known for being less... "trouble" and more sporting than their more wild cousins, the Gracies. They didn't go around challenging people and didn't get into as many fights and push things as aggressively. So it doesn't surprise me that Chuck was skeptical at first and chose to train with the Machados. Even Bill Wallace who hosted the first UFC, didn't like what he saw. Those guys are old school and have relatively conservative values when it comes to martial arts.

not Bob's fault the govt (John McCain) wasnt liking the ufc and put the pressure on the cable companies. then when he tried to get it sanctioned certain people blocked it then ended up buying it and getting it sanctioned themselves. Zuffa wouldnt have got ufc anywhere either if they had it at the same time and didnt have the connections in vegas/commission.

Norris had trained with both the Gracies and the Machados before UFC 1 - his objection to the concept had nothing to do with being a 'paper tiger' as he was legit both on the feet and on the ground.

I would suspect that he (correctly) thought that UFC would be thought of as a freak show and make martial arts look bad. Which of course, as discussed in the article, was the objective to sell PPVs.
