They are in year 1 on a major network. How much do you think they should pay each fighter based on their income (which you don't know)? At least they aren't using mysterious shower room bonuses as a cop out. Phone Post 3.0

1400 tickets
600 comped
Thats almost 1/2 of your live attendance!? HOLY SHYTE! It seems they have to comp that many seats to make it look like theres people there. They should use a larger ramp and special effects so they can cut half of the arena down. Itd make it look more full of people.

PS. I fought in Denver CO at KickDownClassic-5 in 2003 and had more then 1800 people watching live...this is ridiculous for Bellator. lol

Back in 2004, Zuffa was in their fourth year of owning the UFC and weren't even on a network, yet they still paid guys a minimum of $2K/$2K and caught tons of shit for it.

Fast forward to 2013 and Bellator is in it's fifth year, has been on TV for it's entire existence, and now has a deal with a major cable network with a history of MMA programming. Why are they paying less than the pre-TUF era UFC?

Decent fighter purse + no "sponsorship tax" + tickets sold on consignment (ie. fighters who are a draw, even local fighters, can earn a portion of the live gate).

If you watch the dark bouts on spike.com, it's clear most of these guys would not be in the UFC. One of the fighters themselves said he'd be fighting for $500/$500 or $600/$600 elsewhere.

Tim, I'd be willing to bet they'll bring you back when they have another show in North or South Carolina.

the pay level isn't what irks me about that list, I just can't get how Pitbull get's less than guys nowhere near titles and who have far less fights in Bellator. Yes I get contracts and how Pitbull will probably cash in on the PPV but still 12,000 while no names are making 15,000 I just don't get that.

Where did that $12,000 number for Pitbull come from?

Given none of the guys with the low payouts are a draw or particularly important to the card, I'm not sure of the complaint. It is better and easier money than entry level guys like that make in other pro sports.

Most 7-3 boxers would be lucky to get $100 a round, and they'd have hundreds of amateur fights over a period of a decade or so before getting to that point. Pro baseball players at the Single A level get $1050 a month during the season, nothing during the offseason. Again, the barrier to entry is much higher too.

The UnderGround, Mayor

Pay would lower in any other show. In 99 out of 100 events, live gate has to cover everything - profit, advertising, venue, etc. Gross was 73k, payout was $294,500. It would be 1/10th of that normally.

I agree with the reasons that the fighters don't make a lot of money, but it sucks to be a pro at anything and not make enough to pay the rent.

Also if only 1400 tickets sold that really sucks for Bellator. I'm surprised at how low that number is. There are local events and smaller promotions that consistently sell more than that.

You think that's bad pay? Any idea how wide the gap is between the UFC and Bellator in terms of fighter pay:revenue? Clue - wider than Soa Paleleleleleleiiii Phone Post 3.0

Flawed logic.

Oh, mathematics is flawed

Well yeah, since Viacom obviously lost a bunch of money on that event. The gate barely covered having Cheick on the card. Bellator is currently running an unsustainable model, and that's paying some guys $1500 to fight.

As someone said, Bellator needs a region to call home. Maybe the north-east would be a good spot to call home. Jersey, Mass, Maine, stuff like that.

Over 99% of boxers don't even make $500 a fight. The pay disparity in boxing is degrees of magnitude higher than MMA. Phone Post 3.0

actually they only sold 900 tickets... 600 was given away to have an attendance of 1400.

Well not to speak for anyone else, but I personally do believe I can compete at that level. I've been a little inconsistent lately and had a little bad luck but seeing some of the guys that get on TUF or that fight on the prelims, I don't consider them to be a higher level than me skill-wise.

Hopefully I will be brought back, but I'm not holding my breath on them ever coming to South Carolina, and I doubt they'll even come back to North Carolina....

At what point is giving away 2/3s of the amount of tickets you've sold counter productive? Meaning, at a certain point wouldn't you want to stop comping so many tickets regardless of how many you've sold. I get that you want seats to be filled and present a product that appears popular, but that seems to be more of a "start up" tactic, a couple years into the game wouldn't the goal be to be popular and profitable?

I had knew a guy that fought on a Bellator undercard in New Orleans 3 or 4 years ago that fought for free.  If I remember correctly, there were 2 under card fights where they listed the guys as Amateurs, despite this guy having already earned money fighting.

MMA is not an easy industry to make money in for anyone involved, including promoters and fighters.

A 73k gate for Bellator makes me worried for the state of MMA. If Bellator can only sell 800 tickets, how are the bumfuck regional shows going to sell tickets?

Bellator just does an AWFUL job of promoting their cards for the live audience. They pretty much outsource it to whatever casino is hosting the event that week. Bellator is, and always has been, far more concerned with their TV product than they are with their live audience.

Lots of local MMA shows with much weaker rosters easily outdraw Bellator at the turnstiles. Since they don't have TV deals and rely on the live gate to pay their bills, they put a lot of effort into getting people to come out to the show.

Did you know that Jerry Jones made around 231 million dollars (that's operating revenue) and Tony Romo, the star of the franchise, is only making $11 million per year? What does that mean? If I had to throw a guess out there, I would say that it means that owners make a lot more money than employees. Phone Post
