Thirty eight years ago tonight. Never realized until today that someone had done an official, and very powerful, video for the song.

Fuck you witch of November. That song is probably the first song that I ever loved as a kid.

Same for me.

A few years ago I got to visit the Shipwreck museum in Whitefish Point.  Great place if you ever get up that way.

crazy how powerful the ocean is. there was another freighter that was about 10 miles or so away and in pretty constant radio contact. no warning. ship gone.

Whats really crazy is that this happened on a lake.

if you ever been on the great lakes, it just like the open ocean. those lakes are huge, deep and fucking cold.

I'm the last Pirate on Lake Huron and I agree, the Great Lakes are the largest freshwater lakes in the world. They're huge. They're cold...and they're deep.

The North American Great Lakes are more of a connected system of freshwater inland seas than little lakes. Especially Lake Superior. All you have to do is look at a map.

Great thread OP I love that video.

Yeah, it's a big thing right now to do "extreme surfing" on the Great Lakes.

i had a really eery experience at lake superior.

i was backpacking along the pictured rocks at the end of october and camped overnight at a spot near mosquito beach. my campsite was on a bluff overlooking the lake, probably about 100 feet above the water, and about 50 yards inside the trees. i was at the middle of a cove, so i could see cliff faces on either side.

it started raining early in the evening and by 1 or 2 am it was a torrential downpour and the wind had whipped up about about 30 miles an hour. i kept hearing these loud, low pitched booms every few seconds that shook the ground and was getting a little freaked out. i had hooked up with this girl from a hiking group that stopped at the same place i had, so i just hunkered down with her in my sleeping bag and rode out the storm.

early the next morning i woke up, the rain had stopped but the wind was still blowing. the sounds were still going on, so i walked to the edge of the bluff overlooking the lake.

there were caverns cut into the rocks below by the waves, and as a wave would crash into the cave, it would make this sound that shook the ground all around. mind you, the upper peninsula is a layer of topsoil on top of solid rock. the power of that lake during a storm is just awe-inspiring.

i can't imagine what it was like out in that lake, in the middle of the storm of the century.
