Serious question about programming... I started crunching numbers a little while ago because I'm bored as hell at work and I'm already starting to question this newish 531. The newer program has twenty percent LESS total volume. The workouts are less frequent, and even if I include the squats done as accessory work on deadlift day, the volume is still twenty percent less.

Can someone give me a reason why I should go forward with this? Jim Wendler told me to go on with this as planned, but I don't see why. Obviously I'm not an expert. So if I'm just retarded and need to listen to him, please say so. Phone Post 3.0

When I first started 531, I could only lift Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. I didn't want day 1 to be a Monday, and day 4 to be the next Monday, because that meant I was only doing each lift once every 9 days. So I was doing all four lifts in one workout every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but I wasn't doing any of the accessory work. I did this for 8 months.

I was ready for a change, so I asked Jim Wendler if doing the lifts spaced out to nine days would be enough, and he basically said no, but if I added "first set last" and did all of the accessory work, then I would be good to go. So that's what I did for the last 10 days or so. Then I started crunching numbers and even with the added "first set last" and including the sets that I do (65% for 5x5 like you suggested) as accessory work, i.e., squatting on deadlift day, the volume is still not as much as what I was doing before. So really it isn't a new 531, it's just new to me. It's 531 with an added first set last, instead of doing the 5 sets of 10 reps of the main lift, I'm doing the 5 sets of 5 reps at 65% of the other lift. I hope this makes sense, I'm trying to type on my phone while my boss is pacing around the office haha Phone Post 3.0

With first set last do you do multiple sets with it?

Why not do it for multiple back off sets of whatever the prescribed reps are for that day? And then move on to the other lift.

Squat
531
first set for 4-5 sets of 5

Deficit DL
5x5 @65 or whatever. Just start somewhere and add 5lbs a week.

This should be more than enough work.

Do you mean on deadlift day rather then doing 5 x 10 of deadlifts as assistance your doing 5 x 5 at 65% of squats after your work sets of deadlifts and vice versa?

275 x 15, 315 x 15 then 330 x 12 on bench today. Did a back off set of 225 x 30 to finish. The high rep stuff is going well at the moment.

I'm seeing the elbow specialist tomorrow, I'll hopefully find out when their going to operate on it.
