On May 28th 2013, a South African scuba diving team were conducting a dead-body recovery effort. They were recovering bodies from a Nigerian ship that had sunk 3 days prior. What they found is astonishing. A sailer had actually survived by finding an air pocket for himself as the ship sunk to the bottom of the ocean. For 3 days Harrison Okene was living in the ship. He had no food, no water, and was in pitch black. Video footage of his rescue has recently been released.

Holy shit!  that's awesome but could you imagine the torture he would have experienced if the ship was in a deeper part of the ocean?  The pressure would have squshed him alive

Fuck yeah! I read a couple of linked articles and this stands out

"He sensed he was not alone in the darkness.
"I was very, very cold and it was black. I couldn't see anything," says Okene, staring into the middle distance.
"But I could perceive the dead bodies of my crew were nearby. I could smell them. The fish came in and began eating the bodies. I could hear the sound. It was horror." Phone Post 3.0

Awesome story but that dude will have nightmares at the sound and smells of fish eating his crew mates. People throw around PTSD a lot these days but I bet that guy will have it Phone Post 3.0

Before I saw the video I though he was treading water the entire time. Luckily it seems like he was able to sit on that platform. What a horrible situation to have to endure. Phone Post 3.0

Wow, that's horrific. How deep was the water? Imagine wanting to escape but being unable to even make an attempt for fear of drowning because it's so dark?

Thanks for the quotes. Can anyone provide more? When did this occur? Phone Post 3.0

30 metres deep and the tug ended up upside down on the bottom. The Chef needed two days of decompression in a hyperbaric chamber when he got topside. Phone Post 3.0

Wow- 2 days or decompression because he was 100 feet deep?! I guess there is a longer period of time necessary when you're down for longer and more nitrogen gets in your blood over time? Did he have any bends side effects? I'll check out that article now, thanks! Phone Post 3.0
