UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis was originally scheduled to defend his title next weekend at the UFC on FOX 9 in Sacramento. Pettis unfortunately injured his knee and tonight told UFC Tonight that he will be out for six to eight months: “The doctor said six to eight months. I’m hoping six months, so hopefully I’ll be back for a July fight.”

Although the layoff will be the division on hold a bit, there should be no need for an interim champion. Originally scheduled to face TJ Grant, then Josh Thomson, there really will be no idea who the number one contender will be when Pettis returns.

Pettis does however have some ideas as to who he'd like to fight upon his return: "“Nate Diaz has been talking so much. He looked pretty decent in his last fight. I hope he works his way up and we get to fight.”

I've noticed that Pettis is doing everything humanly possible to not fight TJ Grant. Probably because he knows TJ will push him against the cage and then push his shit in.

I'm ok with this, with GIlbert, TJ grant and Nate Thompson(and you could through in the Other Nate:Diaz) having imo legit claims at a title shot, maybe there can be fights between them and clarify the title picture.

He wants to fight a guy on a 1-fight win streak?

While waiting for Pettis to heal, the only real fight should be TJ vs Thomson to see who fights Pettis when he gets back. Diaz is a couple of fights out, Melendez is in that area, but he got his shot at the belt recently, and TJ and Josh are on better streaks right now.

Nate could fight twice in that time. Easily be in line for a title by the time Pettis makes it back. Phone Post 3.0

Diaz atleast has to beat the winner of Bendo vs Thompson IMO. Or at least another top opponent. Diaz stays active and strings another win together, I'm fine with it. Phone Post 3.0

Pettis saw those TUF Finale numbers and those Nick Diaz numbers ...... and that amazing post fight interview.

He wants that GSP v Diaz PPV money, so he calls out Nate. Smart man.

Would be a great fight too. Phone Post 3.0

I think Nate would have to beat Josh or Bendo. They both have really convincing wins over him.

UGCTT Molsonmuscle360 - I've noticed that Pettis is doing everything humanly possible to not fight TJ Grant. Probably because he knows TJ will push him against the cage and then push his shit in.

i know right, to think he went through the entire effort of traveling to where TJ lives, disguising himself as a teammate of his, then intentionally concussing him during what TJ thought was a routine training incident. For the next several months anthony stayed "in character" stopping by to see how TJ was doing every so often only to put an unknown chemical in TJ's water that mimics the long term effects of a concussion to ensure he would be out for a while. All to avoid a fight, its crazy more people arent upset about this.
