Daniel Cormier won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and then was brought into the UFC after the promotion sold to Zuffa, parent company of the UFC. Cormier is an impressive 2-0 since joining the UFC, is hoping to move to lightheavyweight soon, and now has a new long term deal in place:

Daniel Cormier has signed a new eight-fight deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, according to a report from UFC Tonight on Wednesday evening.

“D.C.” is currently in discussions for his next fight, according to the report, and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans has been brought up as a potential opponent on a March 2014 UFC card.

Cormier told the Fox Sports 1 program that while Evans’ name has come up in conversation regarding his next challenge, nothing is set in stone as of yet.

He should be paid 10k to show and 100k to finish, that would be an interesting contract!

I'm curious in how the contract negotiations go with the Strikeforce guys - they had much better contracts in SF in general, but I guess the UFC still holds most of the negotiating power due to being the huge promotion in mma

Eight fights? So he wants to be locked into those terms for the life of his career?

Good for UFC. Not so good for Zinkin/Cormier/AKA.

Lol. Where else would you want to fight? Phone Post 3.0

did you read what he said? he said he's "locked into those terms for the life of his career"

that means lets say he becomes champion. he still has the same contract for all those fights when/if he defends his belt.

terrible decision IMO

Generally yes. For most deals that have become public, guys have gotten signing bonuses.

But most folks should know by now, disclosed pay is only part of the equation.

I would like to think, that there is some discretionary bonuses. Like if he becomes champ, he can be eligible for more money, maybe some PPV %.

that's the thing. if it isn't in his contract it's up to the whim of the ufc brass. i dont know i'd rather have a contract that guarantees me a ppv cut rather than it be up to the whim of the UFC. 8 fight contract is terrible, no wonder cyborg turned it down

I'm sure his managers had those terms and included into the contract.  They arent morons. Bunch of doomsday people in here always thinking worst case scenarios without even had a glimpse of the contract or terms of it. Considering one of his best buddies and training partner is the UFC HW Champion and has dealt with this type of thing before, I'm sure theyve talked things over.

what benefit is there to signing a long term deal? the terms aren't guaranteed. 8 fight deal. the ufc can cut you basically any time. if you lose a fight and the ufc feels you are overpaid they can either re-negotiate or cut you. if you win a bunch you can't re-negotiate as you still have several fights left. this isn't like hockey where an 8 year contract is awesome for you. long fight deals are not beneficial to the fighter.

Eight fights at 2-3 fights a year could take 3-4 years to fulfilll. If another upstart promotion like Affliction came along, Cormier might have the chance to fight for 2-3x his UFC purse amount.

This is smart for the UFC. By tieing up Roy Nelson, Cormier, Anderson Silva and others in 8+ fight contracts they are saying "No other promoter can enter the big leagues of MMA unless they build their own stars or wait 3-4 years."
