This shot of the Mick gives me chills and I've long thought this, along with the photo of Gehrig's "luckiest man" speech are the greatest American sports photographs in history.

The image of Mantle silently captures the sadness and solitude of a great athlete in decline.

White guy (Peter Norman) was black balled by Australian authorities after this incident. Pretty disgraceful considering he was likely our greatest sprinter ever.

He was also "overlooked" by the organisers of the 2000 Olympic ceremonies. Team USA became aware of the snub and invited him to take part as a guest of their team.

 

Wait why was he blackballed if he did nothing, our did he raise a gloved fist also? Phone Post 3.0

That poor ginger was shunned by the Australian Olympic committee for just being on the podium while they did that. Still to this day he is not mentioned. There is really good doco about it.
