Top from left: Busta, Fabio Gurgel?, Wallid!, Carlson, ?, one of the Gracies?
Bottom from left: Johnson Sperry, Bebeto or something like that - one of the long time team members for Carlson/BTT?, Goes, ?

Busta looks pretty similar. Sperry and Wallid look young, Goes looks like a kid.

I love that pic. Yeah, you mean Luis Bebeo Duarte, Wasa.

Bottom far right is Mestre Ricardo Cavalcanti, who started (and runs) Carlson Gracie Las Vegas!

Here's another article. Would like to "wrap" Renzo up and would choke Roger Gracie out.

Thanks for sharing that Wasa, it's a pretty good article from Sherdog, but I've already caught at least one error.

The info about the Carlson Gracie (Sr) vs. Waldemar Santana fight is incorrect.

They met in 1955, but it was a jiu-jitsu match -- and a draw. The vale tudo fight which Carlson won by TKO was in 1956.

Cavalcanti has newspaper clippings about the fight framed at Carlson Gracie LV along with some great old photography.

One of the most friendly and down to earth "big name" fighters I've met. He talked about how he and Minotauro used to do literally hundreds of reps of guard techniques, and you can see it in his fights. I can't think of anyone else so comfortable playing open guard in MMA. Phone Post 3.0

Yep, two draws, four wins for Carlson.

Thanks for posting that, Phoenix. Great quote from that Allan Goes interview:

“These guys these days, they need 10 week training camps. Dude, if a guy comes and knocks on your gym and says “hey, I’m gonna’ kick your ass”, are you gonna say “hey can you come in 10 weeks? In ten weeks I’m gonna be ready for you.” What is that? That’s the difference of the guys back in the day and the guys today. The guys back in the day are ready any time. We were born ready. We train everyday, we have good nutrition everyday. You are not a warrior on occasion. You wake up warrior, you die warrior. I don’t like it. In the fights these days guys just hold you and hold you, and throw two punches and look to the clock. That is not a warrior.”

Even if an error, along with the article on JMMA, some of the best MMA historical pieces ive read. I think those 2 articles barely got a whiff on here, sad.

Yeah, don't get me wrong -- it's still pretty good. I remember Sherdog having a good piece on Shooto as well.

There always seems to be some facts in dispute about Brazilian jiu-jitsu history, too.

The Carlson Gracie Academy in Chicago (now run by Carlson, Jr.) has a Carlson Gracie, Sr. profile which lists that first meeting between Santana and Gracie as a jiu-jitsu (gi) match, but others imply it was a vale tudo.

Everyone agrees it was a draw, though, and the big rematch the next year was won by Carlson via TKO. I've seen the newspaper accounts, they're also printed in Kid Peligro's book "The Gracie Way."

Roberto Pedreira is supposed to have a book coming out this year about Brazilian jiu-jitsu's early history. He was giving chapter-by-chapter English summaries of Relia Gracie's book about Carlos Gracie, Sr, but stopped for some reason :(

allan is super legit guard work offensive and defensive.. another un crowned king has got to be murrilo Bustamante..

taking no shots was always first priority ont he bottom so they were not as dynamic as some modern guys.. ala shinya aoki but these guys are still way ahead of the curve for many that take a beating trying to pull off positions

100 percent on point

hackett, brother, PLEASE man, post more.

Not just in this thread, I mean in general. I can tell you are more old school than me. I love being educated on older stuff. Guys like you and crowbar are a rare breed on these forums.  You've got knowledge man, I know it, so share it more!

This is the Shooto one i think you're talking about, its about JMMA in general, and it prowrestling roots, and the connection of all the founders of Shooto, Rings, Pancrase, Pride.

Yeah, i know BJJ history and stuff in general can be quite disputed and contentious, lol. How about Renzo's book though? Seems to have a good rep?
