http://msn.foxsports.com/ufc/haymaker/ufc-ceo-s-son-earns-scholarship-offer-from-notre-dame-addresses-haters-012114

Winning at life has clearly not skipped a generation in the Fertitta family.

We already know Lorenzo Fertitta is a billionaire a couple times over with Station Casinos and Zuffa. And the UFC CEO’s oldest son, Lorenzo Jr., was a star football player at powerhouse Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas and now plays for Villanova. Well, as it turns out, Nicco, Fertitta’s middle child, might actually be better on the gridiron than his brother.

Nicco, who also plays at Gorman, received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame recently – a full ride, he tweeted – and he already has offers from the likes of Hawaii and Boston College, according to Scout.com. The recruiting service has the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Nicco ranked as the 30th-best safety in the country and a three-star recruit. Not too shabby.

“It’s a great feeling for sure,” Nicco told Scout. “Notre Dame is a big-time school and it just kind of shows that all the hard work I’ve put in is paying off. I’m not looking to make an early commitment or anything right now. I’m still open to every school and haven’t even thought about cutting my list down but the offer from Notre Dame is definitely a big one for me for sure.”

In his tweet, Nicco said he was “proving the haters wrong.” Well, of course he’s going to have haters. His dad is extremely rich and eminently successful in two separate business ventures. People are going to cry that Nicco is only getting these offers because of his father and that he doesn’t need the scholarship because his pops is loaded.

Well, if you look at Scout’s list of the best safeties in the country, you’ll see there are players below him who have interest from the likes of Alabama, Florida and Penn State. One of them – No. 34 Johnny Shaw – is committed to Texas. So, Nicco’s list falls pretty much right in line with what his peers at his position are getting.

Plus, if colleges were just throwing scholarships at players who have rich, famous daddies, why didn’t Lorenzo Jr. go higher? It isn’t like Villanova is a college football powerhouse. The Wildcats don’t even play in the Football Bowl Subdivision. They play in the subdivision formerly known as Division I-AA.

As for the second point about Nicco not needing the scholarship on a financial level? OK, yeah. You won’t get any arguments from us on that front. But don’t you think the Fertittas will contribute to whatever program he ends up at, at least on some level?

Nicco is probably going to have to deal with people putting an asterisk on everything he accomplishes in his life because of his last name. He’ll learn to live with it. His dad sure did, stepping out of the shadow of his own casino mogul father. We’d say he turned out all right.

Thread title is wrong, he is not exactly going to ND. He got an offer from them.

Also that family has kids (Daughters) in USC and they are USC fans. Really doubt he ends up going to ND which is it's biggest rival.

Whether he earned the scholarship or not, good call by Notre Dame. Billionaire alumni are good for business. Phone Post 3.0

willienugget - One of his teammates just accepted an offer from Nebraska today. It's a pretty big time school for Nevada. Now I know why they have like ten different uniforms and play on an immaculate field.

randall cunningham jr is their QB this year haha

He is a stud athlete and the son of a billionaire, no matter where he goes, he will bang super models. Seriously, he could go to school in Antartica and some gold digger super model will jump on the next boat and be down there to bang him. Really doubt that is an issue for him.

Will be interesting to see where he goes and if he takes a scholarship or walks on somewhere. My guess is it means a lot to him to earn it on his own and not take his parents money to go to school so we will see where he ends up.

They play games on national TV and their facilities are better then most college campuses. Going to games there to watch as a fan is like going to a small colleges schools, they are crazy.

Good for him. That family doesn't have to worry about the money though, so a full ride doesn't seem like it should matter. It would be awesome if him getting a full ride to a school would prompt Lorenzo to pay for someone else's education. Someone who needs it more than him.

Im a lifelong ND fan and go to many games every year. Fertita is pretty highly rated for his position and hes would be a nice addition to the defense if he signs with ND.

ND and USC are fierce rivals on the field and in recruiting. ND maintains a BIG recruiting presence on the west coast so you cant count them out of the running for Fertita even if he has sibling there and his family made a donation.

ND also has all sorts of athletes/famous peoples kids on their team inlcuding: David Robinsons son, Torii Hunters son, Chris Collinsworth son. and im pretty sure they have a scholarship offer out there for Snoop Dogs son as well as Jon Bon Jovis son attempting to walk on. so they arent short on star power when it relates to player parents.

Tailgating at ND is a blast and it would be awesome to see Lorenzo walking around at some games next season

AssAssassin - Silly me, and here I was getting perfect scores on the SAT's and toppling math contests, science fairs, etc... What did I get out of it? A letter from Princeton saying I am more than qualified but my "race quota" was full.

Earned me a 50$ scholarship once too. I keep forgetting 'Murican universities aren't about academics anymore.

I guess I should have chosen a sport, instead of Mathematics. Good to see rich kids getting full rides to allegedly educational universities because of athletic accomplishments.

I am not going to say he didn't deserve it, nor do I want to take away from his accomplishments, but this system is toxic. 'Murican universities abused me even though I put their math department on the map with several big papers.

Now I no longer live in 'Murica, and I will never do anything that benefits that terrible empire. I am not the only one, educated people are leaving, universities might as well become athletic institutions and keep pumping out those communications degrees for athletes.

Athletes get first pick of classes... Fortunately for me not a single one of them could ever take the classes I was taking (maybe a few, but I never saw them, or they were smart enough to realize sports is more lucrative money wise than advancing civilization).

God Bless 'Murica.
Do you understand the massive amount of revenue football brings into these institutions which is why a major university like Florida will recruit kids that can barley read but are athletically gifted. I understand where your coming from though education isn't as valued in America as it once was and it's only Gona get worse. Phone Post 3.0

You sound upset ^^^ chill out, nobody forced you to focus on school, science etc. I'm a phd in history and have my own issues with the education system but nobody owes us anything. Life's better when you realize that Phone Post 3.0

The article is about Nicco, Lorenzo's middle son. Lorenzo jr is Lorenzo Sr. Eldest son.

Nicco Fertitta is the one being recruited by a bunch of different colleges. Phone Post 3.0

Notre Dame seems to give high profile father's full rides from time when you wouldn't expect it. Both of Mike Golic's son's went there on football scholarships. His daughter went there on a swimming scholarship. Cris Collinsworth's son is now there on a football scholarship. The above football players were good high school players, but not the type of players you would expect for a major d-1 school like Notre Dame. They usually get to pick which 4-5 star recruits they want to come to the University. I don't know anything about Golic's daughter, but it's odd his whole family went there on athletic scholarships. Joe Montana's son was there on a football scholarship until it was evident he wouldn't play, so he transferred. I'm sure there are others....I don't follow the program that closely.

I graduated from ND. Dullest atmosphere I've ever been to ever. Stern faces, muzzled mouths and everybody looks bored. At other schools the girls are generally prettier and happier.
