There has been a lot of controversial decisions lately, including a few at this past weekend's UFC 169. Obviously the judging in mixed martial arts needs to be looked at and revamped, but the simple solution is always "don't leave it the hands of the judges." Of course that's always easier said than done, but Carlos Condit is a great example of a guy who tries to leave the judges out of the equation:

“[Finishing fights is] important to me. With judging being as screwy as it is these days, that’s definitely a concern,” Condit told MMAjunkie. “We train to finish, and luckily for me, that’s just kind of my fighting style.”

Condit didn’t receive his “Natural Born Killer” nickname for nothing. Many fighters are unwilling to take the types of risks needed to land a fight-ending knockout blow or tangle an opponent up in a submission. Condit, however, seems to do it with ease, which he admits is a difficult thing to be taught or learned.

“I don’t have to do much different than what I already do,” Condit said. “I just kind of follow my instincts and get the finish very regularly.”

If that isn't impressive enough, the fighter leading the pack in finishing fights is lightweight Joe Lauzon. Lauzon has twenty three professional wins and only one of those is by decision, his most recent win over Mac Danzig. That equates to a 96% finish rate in his wins. That's an impressive feat considering that Lauzon has been competing in the UFC since 2006.

Kenny Florian is well remembered for a post-fight speech where he called out his fellow fighters for fighting safe, telling everyone "I finish fights." Florian finished an impressive 12 of his 14 wins, for a finish rate of 86%.

If you count only their WEC/UFC wins, Carlos Condit has an 81% finish rate, Lauzon a 90% finish rate, and Florian an 83% finish rate.

There are more than likely a few fighters with a low number of fights who currently boast a 100% finish rate, but if you consider guys with ten or more fights inside the UFC, Joe Lauzon is the most successful finisher ever inside the Octagon.

Condit spent the whole bout with Diaz beckpedaling and pointfighting. Guess that's a compliment to Nick more than anything if he says he normally fights to finish.

He doesn't just say he fights to finish, he actually proves that he fights to finish. His record speaks for itself. Phone Post 3.0

Beloved? Condit was one of the most hated guys in the sport in between his fight with Diaz and his fight with Hendricks.

MMA fans are some of the most fickle pieces of garbage on the planet.

well, apparently except in that one instance that I mentioned. I realize you might have missed the fight and are working just off the numbers in the article.

It's interesting because neither Condit nor Joe appear to have exceptional power. They are simply more aggressive than most fighters. It weakens the common argument that fighter x always goes the distance because he is fighting good competition. If every fighter were as aggressive as Condit, Lauzon, Matt Brown, etc, we'd have tons of finishes.

Condit didn't spend the fucking fight running away, stfu. He was COUNTER striking, why is it so hard to understand that if you run at Nick Diaz and stand still and let him throw his combos on you that that's not a good idea and that's how everyone loses to him? Should Condit of done that? I bet you would though because you're so tough bro. Hey bro? Bunch of tough bro's here.

If just one fight matters when you judge a fighter and their attributes, then I suppose Mark Hunt has a glass chin because JDS KO'd him - right??

Common son, that's some weak sauce right there! Phone Post 3.0

I feel Condit has changed or went back to what he was doing before that fight. I always wonder what he truly thinks about his bout with Diaz. The way he has fought after that fight makes me think Condit either let the talk of the running get to him or after watching the fight said fuck this point fighting game ima do what I do and let the chips fall where the may. As a fan who has never stepped into the cage but has competed in athletics something about going out on my shield is more desirable to me than winning by the point game.

Off the record I'm sure Lorenzo knows a few fighters with higher finishing rates.

Sorry on phone had to quote everything. To me having the respect from my peers was more important to me than winning. For me playing for respect allowed me to complete at my highest level. If I won by the way Condit won against Diaz and had the fan blow back he had, I'd rather go out like Varner.

Condit is the most entertaining fighter in the UFC and future WW champ.

Condit destroyed Nick in a very entertaining fight.

He did what he had to do to beat Diaz, because he wanted a title shot. Phone Post 3.0

And he still threw alot of finishing strikes while easily winning the fight along the way. Condit > Diaz all day

Though the article clarifies that the stat is their finishing rate in their wins, the thread title is misleading. Condit's finishing rate is actually 75% and Joe Lauzon's is 68.75%.

Yeah that's true Phone Post 3.0

people didn't hate that he had a tough fight, or that he tried to point fight or "counter" too much...

people hate that condit sold the fight with language like "its gonna be a dog fight" and made everyone completely hype about it, and then performed the way he performed. condit literally turned his back and ran away in that fight. it was a sorely disappointing performance from condit, who everyone knew as the NBK and expected fireworks, based on what he said and his past fights.

I know the criticism of the Diaz fight, though I strongly disagree. Why was he hated on for the Hendricks fight? From what I remember that was an awesome fight.

Yea, condit is awesome. Very agressive and goes for the kill..

EXCEPT the DIaz fight! U can call it whatever, counter fight blabla but it was THE ONLY FIGHT that he fought like that. Not even Hendrix who has a KO power condit try to back up/ run.

Something to think about... Why? Phone Post
