The Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels have exchanged late-inning relievers in a straight-up one-for-one trade, the Pirates announced early Friday evening.

Jason Grilli will head to the Angels while Ernesto Frieri is sent to the Pirates.

Grilli, 37, was an All-Star and one of the best closers in baseball last season for the playoff-bound Pirates, though he wasn't quite as dominant after a late July arm injury. This season, Grilli has 11 saves, one hold and four blown saves with a 4.87 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings. He lost his closer job to Mark Melancon.

“We are appreciative of all that Jason has done for the Pirates and in our community,” said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington in a statement. “We believe that adding Ernesto Frieri was a good move for our bullpen. He has been an effective late inning reliever who, despite his struggles to date this season, has solid indicators that cause us to believe he will be a quality addition to our bullpen this season and potentially beyond.”

Frieri has also lost his job as closer, as Joe Smith has taken over the role for the Angels. Phone Post 3.0

The longest HR this year and the longest in the AL since ESPN started tracking HR distance in 06.

As for Grilli for Frieri both have struggled this year but Grilli still has an ERA 1.5 lower than Frieri. He can't do any worse than what we had. Ernesto was so bad this year it just got to be ridiculous. After he walked the bases loaded yesterday he HAD to go.

Why? Stanton hit one ONE foot shorter and there wasn't talk of roids.

I didn't accuse him of shit. People already hate on Trout and accuse him of it...I was just stating that the talk will only get worse with bombs like that. Never said I like it or agree.

Act like I'm a fan? Jackass

The Angels have been playing good ball recently, but it seems like whenever they have a chance to gain ground on the A's, they blow it Phone Post 3.0

Although much of their losses lately can be attributed to the bullpen, mainly Frieri Phone Post 3.0

Aybar deserved a spot based on play. But doesn't have the name recognition. And Hamilton if he hadn't missed so much time and had those numbers over 80 games would have been. Phone Post 3.0

I may be going to a game this week. Where is the best place to park at the stadium?

Looking forward to seeing Mike Trout and my very own Blue Jays if it all works out Phone Post 3.0
