A few years ago when Zuffa announced they were going global and then got the infusion of oil money from Abu Dhabi I knew the UFC would last a long time.

The organization has no real motivation to change its pay structure as long as it can replicate its model in developing markets. With the reality show theme and now a digital platform, the brand can be easily exported.

The one thing I can see killing off the UFC is if virtual reality takes off. Then the target demographic will just get into gaming too hard core too care about anything real. Phone Post 3.0

I disagree. I look at the UFC like a bad poker player, a donkey. Loose, arrogant, aggressive, a good run of lucky cards can make this donkey look awesome and powerful but in the long run, when everything evens out, the donkey is going to fuck it all up and ends up busted.

The lucky cards in this instance are Forrest and Stephan's memorable fight, Lesnar deciding to become a fighter and being initially successful, Cyborg being popped before she could separate Ronda's face from her body, etc. The donkeys are sitting on a huge stack, but are in the process of pissing it all away. Only time will tell if they can pull their heads out of their asses and keep it together

Not saying that I fully agree with your post 100% but that was a pretty good analogy. Voted up Phone Post 3.0

Again, you're thinking in strictly American terms.

No one in Brazil or Southeast Asia cares about Brock Lesnar or Forrest Griffin. As the UFC expands globally, what US fans think will become largely irrelevant. If the MMA fad dies down here, Zuffa can just rebuild it in a few other countries simultaneously at lower cost.

This model could easily last decades. Phone Post 3.0

Interesting article on cagepotato,

"is it time to admit MMA will never become a mainstream success?"

Good read, has MMA plateaued? I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Phone Post 3.0

That oil money for 10% of the UFC was used to bail out the failing Station Casinos that took a huge hit during the recession. That wasn't expansion. That was self preservation by Frankie and Enzo.

The thrill is gone.

Even the Brazil events can't fill a room. The UFC can't sell their product overseas. They can give it away on Globo or hand out tickets in Germany, but no one outside of the US, Canada and Brazil really care, and they're starting to care less and less all the time.

The UFC is trying to expand through opening up TUF lemonade stands across the world. Yeah everyone can get a cheap glass to get a taste but it's hard to take them seriously as a top progressional org when their model for expansion is basically the global version of MTV's Real World. Growing? Sure, but that glass of lemonade just isn't quite as sweet, as it's starting to seem more watered down than the donair sauce in Halifax. Phone Post 3.0

What if I told you there is a huge new fanbase that hasn't even seen the Forrest/Bonnar fight and to whom the great white sasquatch being seen in an octagon is just a legend.

My nieces/nephews and their friends really started getting into the fights lately. They are like 7-10 years old. My one nephew thinks Jon Jones can beat Superman because Superman can't choke people. Phone Post 3.0

Fans are going to love the UFC when they discover it because MMA is some compelling ass shit. As soon as they grow brains and start to realize all of the behind-the-scenes fuckery, the terrible wages, the most promoted face of the organization being someone who doesn't fight, the manipulation of competition, anyone with intelligence is going to have a hard time putting their support behind that kind of product

Quite a run of luck... Forrest, lesnar etc was a long time ago

You're like that bitter loser who can't figure out why the "donkey" is taking all your money because they aren't playing correctly (like you are)... You keep waiting for them to go broke but they keep getting richer and richer while you don't have 2 nickels to run together Phone Post 3.0

Don't be stupid. Why would I want the UFC to go broke? I want them to do better, for the fighters' sake. They are playing fast and loose with people's lives and welfare, and it's going to catch up with them.

While you is my boy you are talking crazy (well, I leave out the virtual reality thing cause that was REALLY crazy...)

The UFC #'s are fucking plummetting. They are heading DOWN in a big way with no end in sight. Unfortunately for the fans, it is such a cash cow for the Fertitta's personally that they probably won't sell because it is just a wash, rinse and repeat money printing machine for them. So there is no pressing need for them to abandon ship even though they are struggling to keep at the same revenue numbers they had in 2010 even though their revs should have tripled in size since then with the FOX deal and all the mainstream attention.

Until someone comes along and starts to get close to their numbers they won't see a bad margin, even with the expense of international expansion, so they will plug along making a mess out of MMA for years to come......

It's funny in America we keep hearing about how it's exploding in other countries then you see a few of the Fight Night Brazil cards not selling out. Last night I watched the latest JRE with 2 Australians who said MMA has taken a dive there in the last few years.. Rogan didn't know what to say to that.. It's hard to know what to believe unless you are living there I guess. All I know is there is no 'buzz' surrounding the sport like there was a few years ago in my area. The UFC thinks Rousey is a Lesnar type transcending figure, which she may be with the media, but she's just not that type of draw as a fighter right now. Outside of her the UFC can't even pretend anybody on the active roster has any sort of buzz or mystique surrounding them. The UFC tried to sell the brand.. people buy a PPV knowing the UFC puts on great shows.. but in reality, its a combat sport, and individual stars are what matter in combat sports. How many boxers will you pay to see on PPV? And to the best of my knowledge I feel like boxing understands this much better and aren't trying to roll out 20+ PPVs a year.
