Oregon mixed martial arts fighter deported to Brazil

Posted: Apr 23, 2014 12:06 PM EDTUpdated: Apr 23, 2014 12:09 PM EDT

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A former UFC fighter who ran a jiu-jitsu academy in Clackamas and served prison time for attempted sex abuse of an underage girl has been deported to Brazil by immigration officials.

Hermes Franca De Barros, 39, made a plea deal in 2012 and pleaded guilty to charges of attempted unlawful sexual penetration and attempted sex abuse. According to court records, the abuse involved a student at the Hermes Franca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Clackamas.

De Barros was once a contender for the UFC Lightweight Title, but was released by the UFC following his arrest.

He then served more than two years in prison in Oregon. He completed his sentence last month and then was remanded to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

According to Department of Homeland Security databases, De Barros was first lawfully admitted to the U.S. in 2005, and he later adjusted to lawful permanent resident status in 2007.

Though De Barros was a legal resident, an immigration judge found him deportable, and on March 19, ordered him removed from the U.S.

A federal official escorted him to Brazil on Tuesday on a commercial airline flight.

He's a really sad story, man. The guy was so loved by UFC fans during his time in the org.

I ran into him at a nightclub in Vegas after the Anderson Silva/Travis Lutter card. He had two of the finest women in the club with him, one on each arm. Why you gotta try to bang a kid, Hermes?

I don't really know the story. How is it sad?  Sounds like he tried to fuck an underage girl and got caught

So what happens when someone gets deported. They just put him in a plane and say "see ya", or is there some kind of a process once he gets to his home country?

I'm sure it depends on their country and what their extradition treaties are.

They wrap him up and slap a "return to sender" sticker on his forehead and throw him in the cargo hold. Phone Post 3.0

It's a sad story because he could have lived up to his potential and continued to be a positive contributor to the UFC. Instead, a little girl got molested. I find that sad.

Did they ever give the age of the girl he did this to? Is he a bona fide pedo or was she like 16 or 17 and he just made a really bad judgement call? I don't remember the details of the charges. Phone Post 3.0

I heard she was 13.

Hermes Franca De Barros, also known as Hermes Franca Barros, 39, was sentenced to 42 months in prison for 2012 felony convictions for attempted second-degree unlawful sexual penetration and attempted first-degree sexual abuse of a minor under 14. According to court records, the abuse involved a student at his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Clackamas.

When I was a HS wrestling coach, Hermes was in our room training pretty often. He'd wrestle with kids and coaches alike. He was a pretty nice guy. Kids loved it because it was cool to have a real UFC fighter in practice with them. Sad to see this. Oddly, I received a belt promotion from Joao Pierini when I lived in CA and fought out of Gladiator Training Academy with him. He seemed nice too.

Perhaps I am not really adept at identifying pedo's. Phone Post 3.0

No idea. Years ago, I received a letter from his wife Helen. She asked me to write a letter on his behalf for some sort of court date he had. I wrote a letter stating that he had never done anything inappropriate in front of me; however, I could not speak to the incident that got him arrested. I doubt the letter helped, but overall Joao was not a sociopath. I think he used exceedingly poor judgment and he should have been incarcerated. Phone Post 3.0

Can you elaborate more on Joao?

My kids used to train with him, and I was always present during the classes, and I knew him for a few years, and the guy was one of the nicest people in the sport that I ever met, then I heard all that shit that went down, and just was dumbfounded, but I kept hearing different stories....
