Good street/bad street used to be quite the past-time in NYC.

Cabrini Green in Chicago was surprisingly easy to stumble into.

If you can't see the Fremont Street Experience anymore, you are about to fuck up.

Miami.  One second you're in fairly upscale Coconut Grove, then literally one street over you're in one of the worst hoods in Miami.

I have a small story on this.

When I was younger we went in holiday to Florida (we live in Ireland).

Driving to Miami airport following a map. My dad was shit at reading maps. So we take an exit too early and are driving around some streets next to the overpass, trying to figure out his to get back on.

Police car pulls up to us and asks if we know where we are going? My mum says we took an exit too soon and trying to get on the highway again. Police officer quietly says this neighbourhood is extremely dangerous and we should not be driving around it. He then tells us to follow him and he will take us back onto the highway. The look on his face was pretty scary, he looked like he thought something would happen right away. Kept looking round him.

When I looked around, nothing looked too suspect. No gangs of people hanging about, or Spanish shop signs etc... Not huge amount of graffiti. I was young but being a white nerd I was into my gangsta rap and GTA so I thought I would know what would look dangerous.

Looking back a young white family driving round a Latino hood in an obvious rental car with suitcases filled with stuff was probably like a fucking neon sign flashing "ROB ME!" to anyone inclined to crime! Phone Post 3.0

The bad hoods in Miami are black, not hispanic.

when walking from back bay to Faneuil Hall in Boston when I was a fresh in college, probably 18yrs old, I was cutting through what used to be known as the combat zone. I had no clue. 2 cops came running up to me and told me I must be lost and that i had to leave the area immediately. they pointed to the direction I needed to go. I was 6'1" 225lbs at the time. seemed not to matter. I guess I looked like bait on a hook.
years later, I used to go there on purpose "just to see".
the city has cleaned the area up now.
I don't think I was in any danger as it was daytime but at night, that place was nasty back in the day.

There's a big upscale-ish hotel (I think a Hilton?) right on the edge of the Tenderloin in San Francisco, near Union Square. Coming out of it, if you go one block to the right you're in a busy, safe tourist area, one block to the left you're stepping over winos and getting checked out by crack dealers.

I got stuck driving in the Puerto Rican day parade in Camden NJ a couple years ago.

took a wrong turn going to the Aquarium with my wife and 6year old in the car

a cop saw me and waived me down and opened the barricades so I could get through... I didn't even ask him too... lol

Enamoratu -

I took a wrong turn in Paris and ended up walking through an area that appeared to be exclusively populated by immigrants from Senegal.

Every group of them I walked past stopped what they were doing and just glared at me.

LOL,

that would be awful!

but awesomely funny!

I'm only 41 which in reality means the area i was walking in was only a shadow of the area that was once known as the combat zone. there were still tons of porn shops and maybe a porn theater? It was there but I'm not sure if it was open for business.
When I was in school, it was just the nasty part of china town. at night there were tons of streetwalkers, junkies and pimps.
I used to go to afterhour parties in chinatown in the late 90's. Rich white kids would rent space on upper floors. One time the cops grabbed a group of asian dudes that were getting on the elevator, all strapped with guns on their way up to rob everyone. I was walking out just as it happened.

Amazingly enough, for years I stumbled all around St. Louis/East STL throughout the night and never had a problem.

Confidence and respect will get you a long way. Ok, I'm lying. It was probably the beer confidence matched up with stupidity and luck.

I think what happens is affordable housing pops up around college areas so students can live off campus they fill up with low income families instead Phone Post 3.0

The ex and I were having a late dinner at a diner in downtown San Francisco down the street from our hotel. She was being a cunt as usual and she storms off before I could pay the check.
As I'm paying the check I see that she walked the opposite way of our hotel.
So I run after her and call her name, she flips me off. I was tempted to just let her go but she turned right down market street and it didn't look right to me. So I run after her and follow the sounds of her heels. All of a sudden the sound stops. When I catch up to her she's standing in the middle of cardboard box city and there are bums everywhere.
I run up to her and scream in her face, "is this what you want? I'm gonna get fucking killed and you're gonna get fucking raped then killed!! Let's go!" I grabbed her by the arm like a child and hauled ass back to geary st.
Needless to say, that was our last trip before the divorce Phone Post 3.0
