Fighter's from 5 years ago cannot compete with the fighters today,

Let me remind you who your #1 contenders in the following divisions are:

HW - Fabricio Werdum - debut 2002
MW - Vitor Belfort - debut 1996 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WW - Robbie Lawler - debut 2001
LW - Gilbert Melendez - debut 2002
FW - Cub Swanson - debut 2004
BW - Dominic Cruz and Urijah Faber - debut 2005 and 2003 respectively

Not only have these fighters competed at the elite level for 5 years, some have done it for over 10 years!!! This not including guys like Josh Barnett and Alistair Overeem who are also vets in the top 10 but not number contenders at the moment.

Also please take note that in order for old guys like Vitor and Fabrizio to climb back to #1 contender status, they had to destroy the so called "new generation" of young fighters like Luke Rockhold, Rory Macdonald, and Travis Browne (debut 2009). These are the fighters who I was told a decade ago were going to make the old fighters obsolete because they train soley mma.

As Fabrizio proved, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. And Vitor proved if you give an old dog young "juice" to "even the playing field" the old lion stomps the young cub.

P.S. Thank you BJ Penn for the great fights and for raising the threshold for what a REAL FIGHTER can accomplish.

Never looked at it like that! You don't realise how long these guys have been around until you put them in a list.

Holy crap! if  Victor Gracie goes another 2 years, that's going to be 20 years competing in the sport!

What do you guys think? Maybe it's bad thread title, something you already knew or noticed, or you just flat out don't care?

there is truth to what you are saying, but definitely how active a fighter has been plays a huge role.

take werdum and nog for example, they are both in their late 30s. nog has fought a whole lot more though, and im sorry to say he has no chance at the title, unlike werdum who has fought a lot, but compared to nog, he has taken it easy.

same comparison with vitor and lets say wanderlei. both at the same age, but silva has just been a lot more active.

There is a difference between a fighter's real age and a fighter's fighting age. Nogueira and Werdum may be 38 and 36 respectively, but Nogueira's fight age is much older than Werdum.

Also, Noguiera has already done EVERYTHING there is to do in mma (including beat Werdum convincingly in pride when Big Nog was in his prime and Fabricio was up n coming), winning titles in both ufc and pride. Compare him to his twin brother if you want to see the difference between someones real age and fight age. Lil nog has taken less than 1/4 the abuse as big nog (not including the semi truck that put him in a coma) and even he is scheduled to fight Anthony Johnson this month in the ufc in a co main event when at the same time people have been asking for his twin to retire for years and years. I think we are making the same point here just saying it differently.
