I'm fairly new to it, I guess. Kind of a hobby I'm more into now. It's awesome, and I really enjoy it, but damn is it painful sometimes trying to convey exactly what's in my brain onto paper... Anyone else find this?

I write fiction mainly. I write so many essays and whatnot for school that when I write for myself it really needs to be fiction, of the fantasy genre. I'm currently working on a piece delving into the heaven/hell war, a topic thats always interested me. Setting and mood is what I find the hardest to convey. Half the time I'm typing with my eyes closed so hard am I trying to visualize the setting. Bram Stoker's Dracula establishes excellent mood in the first half, imo, and I would love to emulate that. Alas, not quite yet.

Just stare at the paper until your bleed out your eyes and the red streams for your words on the paper.

Reading writers you admire is a good way to jump start your own writing. Sometimes you imitate, but you grow out of imitation and develop your own voice.

You said it. I just read Amy Tan's (Joy Luck Club, Bonesetter's Daughter, etc.) memoirs and Tan said that her editor had this wrong assumption that the words just poured out of her, but I was surprised to hear her say that writing can be excrutiatingly difficult for her as well. I enjoy writing...being able to express things and be creative...and all my academic career, I was told that I should consider a career in writing, but I feel just as you do, it's a very painful process.

I spend 1 hour thinking about what to write for every 10 minutes of keyboard time.
