The Mike Echanis "Black Book" on knife fighting/knife throwing has been out of print since 1978 and commanded exorbitantly high prices when offered for bid on eBay. (Echanis was a controversial Hwa Rang Do instructor who got a contract to teach HRD "sulsa" techs to Special Ops units in the 1970s upon his return from Vietnam. Very charismatic figure, got a lot of covers and magazine articles in Black Belt magazine in the 1970s. Went to Nicaragua to teach Somoza's commandos, and died when his plane blew up over Lake Nicaragua.) I haven't bought a copy of Black Belt in years, and looked at the latest issue on the newstand in Borders last night. They had a full page ad for a re-issue of the book, for anyone who might want to take a peek. It can be ordered through their website (www.blackbeltmag.com), Item Code 129, or by phone at 1-800-581-5222. I have an original copy I bought back in the 1970s, I wished I had put it for sale on eBay a few months ago...

The one pictured on the site is the green cover version... for some reason, I was thinking there were multiple versions with different/more content. It's probably worth picking up anyway for the price...

The one in the BB ad is definitely the black cover volume, with offensive knife work and throwing(Vol 3). The green cover (Vol 1) is defenses against knives. BB may not have the black book up on its web page yet, but check the ad out in the magazine... When it was first released back in the late 1970s, the black book was supposedly restricted to military / law enforcement purchases (although I picked up my copy at a military bookstore).

I have had it from day one. Really not much in there of real value. Most of the material is very easy to find in other sources. At the time, it was not released in general due to concerns about who would use the techniques and how. I too wish I had gotten rid of mine sooner... ...then again, they have re'released Cannon of Judo too.
