Thinking about going this summer. However, I was told Florence was better... more laid back and less touristy. I'm actually interested in doing the touristy stuff though. I WANT to see all the sites. Any thoughts?

Went to both just prior to 9/11. Florence was beautiful but it is all renaissance art and architecture. I love the ancient stuff much better so I loved Rome, walked all over that city for a week. Awesome place, lots to see and do, and if you like the old stuff go to Ostia Antica. It is just a 40 min train ride from Rome, and you see the way a Roman town was laid out. It isn't as glamorous as the big ruins, but you can walk into the markets, and ancient apartments. I really liked the way it gave me a feeling for the way a Roman might have lived 2000 years ago. I'd say see both though, the train ride between them was only 2.5 hours and it is pretty scenic as well. In Florence don't go to the Uffizi unless you like those dark old oil paintings showing scenes out of the bible. The first 3 were kinda neat, but the next 3000 were exactly the same. I waited 4 hours to get in, and ran through it in 25 minutes.

Didn't like Vienna too much, boring and the history is all the Hapsburgs (not my favorite period) I really liked southern Germany (Munich and Rothenburg) Great medieval feel, friendly people, beautiful girls, good beer, good food. I like Venice, name another city where there are no cars, but you can see most of Venice in a day. Paris was great once you get past the attitude some of the french have. Most are great, but occasionally you run into a shithead. Nowhere else in Europe was I treated with even a little rudeness.

If you go to Rome go to the Gelatto place that's almost right across the street from the entrance to the Vatican museum. From the street that goes into the Vatican entrance (face down the hill) go down the hill, take a right, then the left (only way you can go). It's how the line forms at the Vatican. Anyways, the gellato place is on the right. It's the best gellato I had in Italy. Z
