THE ARIZONA BJJ, JUDO, GRAPPLING, MUAY THAI, & MMA SCHOOLS F.A.Q. (ver. 1.8) I've added some new schools to this list. Some of the info may be outdated and/or contact info/addresses/websites may have changed. If so, please let me know and I'll update it. I've also added direct links for the lazier among you. I'd particularly appreciate any contact info on smaller MMA training teams, garage training groups, etc., as well as any college wrestling clubs which would allow outsiders to train. Also, any schools/TAs outside the big cities (Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff) where outsiders could train.

PAYSON: Arizona Lion's Den: There is reportedly a branch of the Lion's Den here owned and operated by Instructor Eric Nyenhuis, telephone number 928-468-LION, you can also call PAC owner Keven Rush at 468-474-0916 for info on classes: Nyehuis teaches a combination of BJJ, boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, kickboxing, and submission wrestling and was a former student of Ken Shamrock and Joe Hurley. He may be teaching weekly classes out of the Payson Athletic Club, based on this article from The Payson Roundup dated 04/11/2003. Arizona Lion's Den FLAGSTAFF: NAU (Northern Arizona University) Judo club: link BOXING: There is a LOT of boxing talent and coaching in Arizona. Much of it is club-based, often operating out of backyard gyms and rings in south Phoenix (some of which, although privately owned, would put many commercial gyms to shame). For links/contacts at Arizona boxing gyms, go to: www3.sk.sympatico.ca/hubcit/arizonaboxingclubs.html link or: www.boxinghelp.com/arizona.html "link or: www.boxinggyms.com/addresses/arizona.htm link Some Phoenix-area boxing clubs that have been recommended by forum members: Central Boxing (Harwood Hamilton) - 1755 W. Van Buren, Phoenix - good gym, Tyson has trained there in the past, as well as world middleweight contender Fernando Vargas, heavyweight Rydell Booker, light heavyweight contender Rico Hoye, up-and-coming heavyweight Malcolm Tann, and Phoenix middleweight prospect Jesus Gonzalez. A lot of out-of-towners train here to get away from the distractions of New York and Los Angeles, the weather is nice and its close to Las Vegas where most of the big fights take place. Joe Diaz Gym (7th Avenue and Jefferson) Madison Boxing Gym 11420 N. 19th Avenue, Phoenix -(just south of Cactus) - in large community center on 2nd floor - 602-861-1888 Rodriguez Boxing Club - 1350 West Roosevelt St (602) 256-2103 Blue Corner Boxing Club - 85 E. Frye Road, Chandler (480) 963-8960 Gene Lewis Boxing Club - 59 E. Broadway Road, Mesa (480) 834-1216 WRESTLING Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club (www.sunkistkids.org link) A club that has supported and trained wrestlers for 30 years, focusing on grass-roots training in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and folkstyle and summer wrestling camp opportunities in Tempe, Flagstaff, Tucson, and the 4 Corners area. ASU Head Wrestling Coach Thom Ortiz. These camps are aimed at 5 - 18 year old kids. They also support and provide training opportunities for adult male and female wrestlers. For info, contact their office at (480) 483-2907 to see if they have any programs that you're interested in. Their admin offices are in Scottsdale at 7332 E. Butherus Drive, but I don't know if that's a training site. They may also be able to direct you to local wrestling clubs in the state.

Couple of updates; Relson Gracie / Nathan Zigler is now a Brown Belt. I don't think Parrish is teaching anymore. I don't think Mark Zee's school is still open, I think he's only at the 1932 W. Aster. I think Steve Hochuli is also at Mark Zee's school. Thats the old address for Gustavo. Everyones a critic, huh?

AZChokester is the Arizona authority! If it involves AZ he has the inside info. He knows where all the bodies are buried.

RCJ Machado Affiliate in Mesa - Chief Instructors Marshall Hunter and Greg Holmes at Arizona Fitness (health club), 1837 W. Guadalupe #112, Mesa, Arizona (480) 345-1243, Greg also teaches karate and yoga classes there - Sunshine Fethkeller was teaching Muay Thai there, too, last I heard. Some Corrections: We're still the Machado Affiliate but we're located at Mountainside Fitness (Stapley and Warner in Gilbert, 480-814-8675). It's run by myself (Greg Holmes - BJJ Brown Belt) and two of my BJJ purple belts. $85/month for unlimited training including a gym membership.

AZChokie, I know there is stuff a lot more lethal than a bat in your car. A bat is way to messy for you. Hope your family is doing well. Holmes, not sure what he meant by "swing" and train. But watch your back!:)

ARIZONA MMA DIRECTORY UPDATES: (It's getting to be a hassle to edit the Directory above because each post has almost exceeded allowable characters. I'll post new info here as it becomes available and consolidate it later.) TEMPE: Richard Jones has opened a new Muay Thai school at 1932 E. University Drive, Tempe, (602) 920-3295 for info. His ad says he has classes on Muay Thai, weapons defense (his ad says he's a bodyguard) and "combat knife throwing". Boo-yah! PHOENIX / CHANDLER The 2 Krav Maga schools in town have begun offering classes in the "Bas Rutten MMA Fighting System", which I think is a franchise operation by Bas to add groundfighting to the KM classes (although Bas has offered seminars at the Phoenix site in the past). For further info, contact the Phoenix school (located at 32nd Street and Greenway) at (602) 485-5728 or the Chandler school (NE corner of 54th St and Chandler Blvd, 1 Block east of the I-10/Chandler Blvd exit) at (480) 705-5728, or see their website: http://www.reactdefense.com/krav.cfm. And that's all I know about that.

That's exactly what I'm saying! This place is growing HUGE and there is ZERO instruction outside of traditional MAs anywhere near here. No competition... big MMA base... someone is missing out on a big opportunity
