If they cooperate, anything can 'work', Aiki arts aren't really designed for competition, they were designed as a comprehensive Budo, that develops the character and Spirit of the Aikidoka. There are very few if any actual reports of an Aikidoka openly demonstrating the combat practicability of Aikido vs. other martial arts, its just something the Art itself does not promulgate. Gozo Shioda's Yoshinkan Aikido retained the earlier characteristics of Daito Ryu Aiki with the innovations of Uyeshiba, they are generally considered 'hard' or more combative, but this is only in relation to later incarnations of the Aikido arts themselves, not in comparison to other martial arts. Its extremely difficult to grab the wrist of a skilled striker, and you'll notice Aikidoka don't train kicking much, nor do they demonstrate defense against kicking much, they also don't demonstrate attack and defense against the various grappling attacks of wrestling, Judo, BJJ and those related arts. While the martial arts of America have evolved somewhat in terms to their approach to close quarter combat, Aikido has remained in the 1940's and hasn't evolved much since then, take a close look at some of the training footage, while it is very beautiful, it is also very limited in terms of various attacks and defenses, this can be a fatal error in a fight.
