Hey, dudes. Sreiter and I were talking about this in another thread. Did GT Leo Gaje have a match of some kind with a champion kendoist for the UN in the 1970s? sreiter said to ask sled dog in particular. Anyone got details? What happened? As some of you know, I am into kendo and am interested in how this went down. I've only read about it on one web site.

I have heard and personally seen a lot of stuff about Tuhon Gaje, but that is the first time I heard that story. That said, I am not all seeing. Who knows?

Phil - He told me about it when I went to the PI to training 1 on 1 with him. I thought you were training with him at the time the group put on the UN demonstration - guess you weren't, or maybe you were in canada at the time

He told me this 4 or 5 years ago, so it's a tad sketchy He said he was invited to give a demonstration at the UN (i believe this was about the time they did a full contact tourney at the UN or on the roof of the UN - Somehow a challenge was issued (maybe the japaneese deligate said a kendo man who beat him - or there was a kendo guy in the attendance) The kendo guy wanted to wear his armor, dont remember if he did or not, but Gaje said he wouldnt wear nay protection - they went at it - Gaje owned him

Well, who knows, maybe it's true! What size weapon did he use, any idea? And did he own him trading blows or own him because he closed and grappled him or...?

Although Gaje teachs FMA grappling ("dumog" which looks alot like silat), he doesnt grapple when stick fighting - he womped him with strikes using a normal size escrima baston

The date would have to have been 1980. That was the year before I joined PT. They had a tournament in 1981 (which I was at) and nothing like that happened.

If I can find Leo's e-mail, I'll ask him. Phil, in the mean-time, if you e-mail him or talk to him first, can you get the details? thanks

See if you can get details on what techniques he used and who the kendoist was. Ask him to clarify the "owned" issue. The difference in weapon length is of particular interest. And of course I feel some pride as a kendoka! I'll share a true story while we're at it. I have a kendo instructor who, while he was coaching out west, was challenged in the dojo by a kendo or kenjutsu-ka to some kind of match. Sensei accepted the challenge, told the challenger to arm himself with a bokuto, and armed himself with a FAN. Then he whomped the challenger, hit him so hard on the nose at one point _with the fan_ that he apologized and stopped the match. There are kendo kata that teach outmaneuvering the full-length sword with the short sword (tachi vs. kodachi). Be interesting to learn, if possible, how Gaje may have done it.

Guro Narrie Babao (sp) defeated several various weapons exponents in a weapon sparring match (rules unspecified) about 20 years ago or so. Among his opponents was at least one kendoka.

i am not a kendoist (or is it kendoka), nor am i a FMAist (but i do dabble in FMA concepts and love the FMA). with that said, i am working from basic knowledge, so pls correct me if i am wrong. is kendo very linear in general? if so, perhaps Grand Tuhon Gaje did basic FMA footwork (triangular) and counterstruck? you know the "zone to zero pressure" and all that? just a guess.

Anybody? To answer your remark, Stick, yes, kendo is very linear. There's some video of guys competing under the Media section at www.kendo-world.com that might help.

BTW, what is zone to zero pressure? There are ten kata in kendo, and you can see video of them being performed at the KW site I ref'd above. The last three show principles for the shorter sword beating the longer, FWIW.

i will check the link when i have time. thanks! hyperlinking now... www.kendo-world.com "BTW, what is zone to zero pressure?" basic triangular footwork application: you move to where the strike left cos there's nothing there opposed to being stationary and letting the strike hit you. in the middle of the swing, is 100% damage, at either side of the swing, it's less. i may not have explained it well, i'm sure the others can explain it better. so defensive zoning combined with opponent's linear attacks may have given PT Gaje the edge (forgive the pun)? btw, i know nothing about this story, just guessing given a basic knowledge of FMA.

Schweet. I e-mailed him, too. He wrote back: "What is a sreiter? Naw, I never fought no faggy kendoist, why would I? And who the hell are you?" Just kidding!
