Prof. Joe teaches to keep your opponent's (demos with Roy) hips down so they do not climb up onto your thighs. When Roy does this he does something to Roy's right hip or leg to open Roy's legs but the camera angle doesn't show it. Is he pressuring inner thigh with his elbow?

In one of the segments he is emphasizing controlling the hips and making sure your opponent does not get his butt off the ground. You climb up and he does something that immediately opens your legs. What did he do? Thanks.

sovann, I am sorry but I still do not understand. I don't mean to be difficult, but I am not sure what you are saying. I haven't watched that tape in years so I don't remember what Professor Moreira taught specifically. Please write out a detail list of what was happening and what it is that you are trying to understand. Thanks, Roy Harris

I'll watch the tape again and see if I pick it up. Maybe it also ties in with Joe's Guard Passing series from Island.... ...I'll see if I can dig up the answer. I'd like to see it again myself!

I just re-watched the segment in question (it's right around the 43:00 mark for those following at home). It appears to me that he IS applying pressure along the length of Roy's right thigh. His right knee is underneath Roy's hips, and he points to Roy's right thigh and says something like "It's too high, good....it's this leg I want". He gestures up and down the right thigh (like he did in the beginning of the tape when emphasizing control over the upper leg in passing). Then he places both hands on Roy's right hip and turns away from the camera as he pushes down on the leg (apparently with his elbow and forearm). Roy's legs open instantly and his whole body turns to the side VERY quickly. It seems reasonable to guess that Joe's elbow got right into the nerve. About 90 seconds later (44:22 on my VCR) he repeats the technique at a slightly better angle, but he does not get the same strong reaction out of Roy. The second time around, he is clearly pushing the right thigh down and away with his right forearm (towards 10:00). Check it out and see if it looks almost the same to you. ~Chris

Chris, Yes, this is what I was asking about. Thanks! "Roy's legs open instantly and his whole body turns to the side VERY quickly. It seems reasonable to guess that Joe's elbow got right into the nerve." It happens so quickly I am wondering if it is an ancient Brazilian secret to opening the legs :)

"It happens so quickly I am wondering if it is an ancient Brazilian secret to opening the legs :)" I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you...
