Umali the Kali student that killed a bouncer with a single cut to the leg in a barfight was sentenced a couple of days ago to 17 years. Sorry, spelled his name wrong in the title.

jonwell: it's a weird story, but here's how I remember it. The bouncer told Umali and his friends to stop smoking at a bar. The bar is in NYC, and it is now against the law to smoke in bars. They said "cool", and the bouncer walked away. Bouncer comes back later, and they're STILL smoking. So the bouncer proceeds to ask the gentlemen to leave. There's a bit of a fracas (a little exchange of words, a bit of shoving), but it's quite without incident. The majority of the group has left the bar, but apparently, during the fracas, the bouncer was cut in the leg, and was bleeding VERY badly. He basically bled to death before EMT's could arrive. That's basically how I remember it. 17 years is a long time for a little show of temper.

A little show of temper? He killed the guy for trying to do his job. No offense meant if this is your friend, but I'm not going to shed a tear.

The CSPT
I read this story the first time around. ...All I know is you can only use lethal force against lethal force. Anything else is trouble. The knife "never" comes into play unless you fear for your life or there is the threat of severe bodily injury. Demi

e's more sensible than that. He often cautions others on the dangers of inappropriate force.

some of the stuff not mentioned in threads and articles, etc which if memory serves were facts: it was 2am, they were celebrating a bday and in a bar, therefore alcohol could have been an influencing factor, i don't know the build of the bouncer, but i'm guessing this guy was big, so maybe one party member was being talked to by bouncer, umali saw his friend being talked to by big guy who he didn't know is a bouncer and one thing led to another... in general, alcohol and good judgment don't mix.

jonwell: I didn't know him, but thanks for being sensitive about the subject. I think we're all capable of what Umali did. I train in order to master that aspect of my personality, so that I'm in control of it, not the other way around.

Actually, you are reaching a bit SG. The bouncer, named Tiny, was 6'5" and went 350. He was called in after repeated refusals to put out the cigs by other security guys. The leaders of the group were the sons of a gang leader doing time. Umali targetted the femoral while Tiny was dragging one of the brothers out. Feel free to read the thread on our site which includes copies of newspaper articles for more details. One may quibble with aspects of these articles, but the impression I am left with is that the facts are not pretty.

Just finished reading the articles that are in the dogbrothers.com website. You know what I would have done? Put out my freakin' cigarettes. End of story.

finn: I don't think he necessarily had a mental problem. If a 6'5" 350lbs. bouncer put a headlock on my slightly diminutive friend, and I only stand 5'5", I might have done the same in that situation. The real problem is that he put himself there in the first place (refused to put out cigarettes), and did nothing to de-escalate the situation (left the establishment).

I remember reading the article the way Crafty described it. The others were supposedly the son of some Chinese gang leaders.
