Are Shorinji Kempo, Shorin Ryu, and Shaolin Kungfu the same art? If not, please describe the previous 2.

The quick answer is that several of the Okinowian Karate styles have some roots in Chinese martial arts. This thread has some info on this.

Shorinji Kempo= created by Doshin So. It is a unique Japanese martial art, not to be confused with the American versions of Kempo/Kenpo. I believe the bhuddist religion is a big aspect of shorinji kempo and the art has elements of Aikido, Judo, Shaolin, etc. Shorin Ryu=type of Okinawan Karate, if I am correct. Shaolin=can refer to the many Chinese martial styles decended from the famous Shoalin temple.

The names are almost the same , but what they refer to is different. searching on the web, I found that Shorinji Kempo was founded after the war by a fellow named Kaiso who had studied various Chinese and Japanese arts. Shorin ryu refers to a branch of Okinawan karate some centuries old, and probably actually was derived to some extent from southern shaolin kung fu (and also influenced by fukien white crane)
