Television shows are made by people, and the people aren't perfect. An artist's flaws show up in his work and distort the presented view of reality. If you blindly accept the way an artist portrays people, then his view becomes your view. Although you gain the benefit of another person's perspective and insight, you also gain his flaws. If you watch a movie or TV show, read a book, or listen to music, and you can't find any flaws or criticisms of the artist, then you have failed to distinguish fiction from reality. In the real world, you can say "That's just the way things are" when someone asks "Why is the sky blue?" or "Why do flowers die in the winter?" But in a TV show, "That's just the way things are" is not an accurate explanation for anything. The answer instead is "That's the way the makers of the show decided to make it." If you accept art at face value, then you have been fooled. The artist's perceptions and misperceptions change your worldview, and the deeper the art goes, the more you risk picking up another person's dysfunctions.

That's true, and every writer has delusions. So even when they think they're being honest, they might not be giving you an accurate picture.
