Many people that dislike postmodernism, like to point towards the Sokal hoax as proof that these people are not really worth taking serious.

However, it´s not only people from that tradition that can be tricked.

Read about The Bogdanoff Affair (http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/bogdanov.html)

It´s about how two brothers managed to publish at least five meaningless papers in physics journals.

Read also about how MIT students managed to submit and get their  compuergenerated gibberish accepted at a scientific conference.

The  physician (Sokal) wrote a fake article to a magazine called 'Social text', in order to try to prove that they would "publish an article liberally salted with nonsense if (a) it sounded good and (b) it flattered the editors' ideological preconceptions." (Sokals own words).

"The second (the MIT one), IIRC, was never actually completely accepted, but it did pass a brief review. "

The article says the papers were completly accepted. but when they found out about the hoax, they of course didn´t want to include the hoax in the conference program.

Funny! Reminds me of other hoaxes like weapons of mass destruction, Duchamps "Found Art" (not to mention Jackson Pollock), The poetry of Emily Dickinson (as a recluse how wash she supposed to describe in words real life and nature?)and some of the biggest hoaxes of all time the success of bands like the Beatles (I am specificly refering to the mindless drug ramblings of Sgt Pepper), Crash Test Dummies, and Pink Floyd. If it is thought to be arty or intellectual people flock to it whether it has import or not. Everybody just loves the Emperors new clothes!!
