Because there are always lots of "which camera to buy" type threads on video forums I just wanted to share my experience with these two cameras. I started with a VX-2000 a couple years ago and just recently purchased a PD-170. Back then I bought the VX-2000 because of $$$. I know a lot of others do the same as well, for the same reason. If you're one of those looking to buy a camera soon and are looking at these models, I strongly encourage you to go the PD-170 route. The benefits far outway the difference in cost. Without going into a long explaination of why I feel this way, let me just say that I wish I had waited and saved on that first purchase. The specs on each camera speak for themselves. The way I see it is that anyone looking to spend over $2000 on camera is pretty serious about using it and plans on making some money in the related fields. Do yourself a favor and start with the right tools.

The audio capabilities on the PD are worth the extra money but at this point I think the smart move would be to buy the HDZ1U and just shoot DV on it until you are ready to use HD.

I had thought of that when I made the PD-170 purchase but I figure when HD really becomes a major factor there will be far better models to choose from.

I agree with you about waiting for better (future) HDV cameras but the reason I would go with the Z1 right now is because even it always shoots at 1080i but you can capture as 4:3 DV, on the fly just like a regular DV camera. the 1080i frame scaled down and cropped to 4:3 DV looks just as good as the PD170/VX2000 but you have the source archived on tape in 1080i if at some point down the line you want to create a true HD version of what you were working on now.

Good point. I just played it safe and got a camera I already knew.
