i am starting to experiment with composting. has anyone used any sort of bin, or would recommend/speak ill of any particular one. i was thinking about one that resembled a large barrel, called the urban composter.

I don't think much of those tub composters.  To really get a good compost pile cooking you need a good mix of green and brown (I usually use shredded leaves and grass clippings and throw in fruit, eggs, old veggies, etc).  I find that once the pile hit about 3ft by 3ft it really starts cooking.  They hit about 180 degrees in the center and start decomposting all the weed seeds.  I welded 3 bins for my compost pile but you don't have to get that complicated.  You can actually just pile it up in the corner of your yard if you want.  Once you get it cooking it only takes a week or 2 to break down.
