I have been to India, what do you want to know? I was there for 5 days as part of a longer trip, landed in Chennai, but spent most of my time in the North, went to Dehli, Varnasi and Agra, saw the Taj Mahal, Ganges River, etc.

Which are the safetest parts for a Westerner? How long can a Britisher stay there without citizenship. English is the official language, but where is it most used?

Any tips for water/illness/toilets thing? I?m going to boil the water to make sure, even if it is bottled. When I do get the inevitable shits, what kind of stuff should I eat?

I just talked to a friend who spent 2 months in India and she basically spent most of thsoe two months either vomiting or having diarrhea. AND she ate mostly at "nice" hotel cafe places andsuch. !!! But she insists that its not that bad and to not let that hinder me from traveling and eating and experiencing everything. She also got sick from soda from a soda bottle! Because they re-use the bottles and don't sanitize them I guess. She also said that it was manageable - meaning everytime she got sick she always managed to be near a bathroom or her hotel. I don't know if I want to experience this.

I don't actually vomit often, which can be bad as you need to get the bad stuff out. What part of India did she go to?

I will have to ask but she went to Mumbai for sure and then traveled everywhere.. She is VERY aware of food borne illnesses as she is a graduate of culinary arts and I am convinced that its just India and its something that you will just have to expect. Other friends of ours have also gotten sick from traveling to India and have STAYED sick formonths afterward - wreaking their immune systems. She also mentioned seeing the carcass of a dead cow floating by in the Ganges while people were bathing nearby. In some ways I wish I could have all those parasites already strong in my belly to ward off any maladies during travel to places like that. !!!

never been to india, but spent 18 months in bangladesh.. hmm. boiling your water is good, also look into getting iodine tablets. most street food should be okay i think as long as it has been cooked recently, or is at least hot. avoid stuff that has been left out... if you get the shits, you just need to keep drinking water to flush the wee bugs out of your system, look into getting ORS/rehydration salts while you are there, they should be really cheap. for toilets, use water and your left hand if you dont have paper, wash with soap afterwards..

my sister just got back from chennai. she really enjoyed it. a story: during the tsunami, as the water pulled back they apparently saw a bunch of temple ruins that had been submerged before the waves came rolling back..

she was assisting someone on a medical tourism trip. she got a good deal, helped some people out, saw some temples, and stayed at a resort.
