"Alligator Kills Florida Swimmer Saturday, July 16, 2005 STORIES •Alligator Kills Fla. Man PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A man swimming in a canal Friday evening was killed by an alligator, state officials said. It was the 17th recorded fatal alligator attack in Florida (search). Kevin Albert Murray, 41, of Northport, was swimming in the Apollo Waterway when a 12-foot, 2-inch alligator attacked and killed him, said Gary Morse, spokesman for the southwest Florida office of the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (search). The alligator was retrieved and killed by a trapper and state wildlife officer, Morse said. Several people reportedly witnessed the attack in Port Charlotte (search). Murray had a habit of swimming in the canal, Morse said. As of May, there had been more than 340 documented alligator attacks on humans, with 16 deaths, in Florida since 1948, when record-keeping began." WTF?! Can't people find a local swimming pool?

I see a shitload of bull sharks in South Florida, especially near inlets. I can't believe there aren't more attacks.

"sharks don't like the taste of human meat, ( Most of them don't?)" I think its more the fact that humans are too boney than that they don't like the taste. It still doesn't change the fact that when they decide to attack you're in for a world of hurt (regardless of if you're their ideal prey or not).

If your dumb enough to swim where there are sharks and alligators, jog where there are mountain lions, camp where there are bears, then it's your own dumb ass fault.

Sharks don't attack humans for the taste of our flesh. They just like to fuck shit up. Sharks run shit in the ocean, and we need to rekka-nize.

I once saw a documentary that was going against the cultural belief that shark attacks are super rare - you always have some guy that says something like you have better odds of getting hit by lightning or something. Well, this documentary says that its true that there are very few reported shark attacks... but they are loads of people who "drowned" at sea. In other words, if you go out to the ocean and your friends never hear from you again, they assume you drowned - when in reality you were a shark's dinner. Dead people can't call up a shark attack report. Then again, there are probably witnesses a lot of the time that can testify to a fatal shark attack on behalf of the murdered. I don't know if that documentary is accurate or not - but just a little piece of info to add on to this topic :)

You can't be surprised though when events like these occur, with the sheer number of people in the waters nowadays. People underestimate wild animals and the danger they can present. I caught a baby alligator years ago in a creek, about 12" long, that little thing was incredibly strong. I foolishly tested it's power by letting it bite my hand one day; all I can say is holy shit, not smart. I was recently at Bush Gardens, in the enclosure where they have the hippos there is also a 12-14 foot crocodile, there's a glass screen so you can see underwater up close. Looking at the size and thinking of the proportional power of that critter, up close, erased any silly notions of fighting one off in the water like one imagines. It's no wonder they're known as water dragons. Ditto on the bull sharks. Those things get big. If you go to the beach and take one of those hellicopter tours, notice they get out over the water and don't fly over the shoreline, because if people looked down at the swimmers they would freak out at how many sharks they'd see among them. It really is amazing attacks don't occur much more often, especially considering how stupid humans can be... like ME for letting that little fucking alligator bite my hand!!! LOL

Two days ago I watched a gator swimming along the beach off the Georgia coast. I missed this part, but someone said he came ashore, then turned around & went back out. There were dolphins playing, too. The next day, I heard they chased people out of the water because a bull shark was seen near the sandbar (I missed that one - lucky me).

"You are an idiot if you swim in lakes, canals in florida period " exactly. There's all kinds of shit in lakes and canals. Very very bad idea to swin in them. Gators, poisonous water snakes, weeds to get tangled in and drown, all kinds of other nasty creatures, and then there's the shit people throw in there like broken bottles, shopping carts, etc..etc..etc..

Giant Squid run shit in the ocean...they eat friggin' whales. The Sperm Whale (aka Cachalot) is arguably the King of the Ocean--it's the largest toothed whale, and specializes in eating Squid of all sizes.

It's true - most humans don't have a high enough fat content to be tasty for sharks. However, that doesn't help us too much after we've had a big chunk bitten out of us - the shark makes a face, goes "Ptooey!" and spits out the chunk...and we bleed to death.
