The great wall is pretty cool when you first get onto it. Then when you decide to start walking in one direction and realise that it's fucking gorgeous all around. However once you're 5 miles away from where you started and realise you have to walk back you realise you were a total moran for walking that far.

the great wall was beautiful; i will post pics soon. the forbidden city is overrated; after awhile everything starts to look alike anyway. :)

I've lived in China before, a year at Qinghua university in 2001. My advice would be to enjoy Beijing, invest a bit in finding out about the history of the places before you go, even a little knowledge can enrich the experience a lot. Avoid Shaolin, as Shingen said it's a tourist trap, there are a few cool people still there but not worth the trip. If you do want to do something "martial arty" then I recommend Wudang Shan, I spent a few days hiking in the mountains and sleeping in temples, it was a great experience. Speaking Mandarin is a plus though. If you get a chance, you HAVE to head out west to Xinjiang. Dunghuang (which is actually in Gansu but anyway) is great, then follow the Silk road out to Urumiqi (not a great city but has some cool stuff around it) and then to Kashgar. Enjoy the adventure and chaos that is China!

Ondamat, that was exactly the trip I did in 1999, although I flew to Urumqi from where i was studying in Nanjing. Was amazing and I'm sad I didn't take better pictures.

I am thinking about doing this tour. Any opinions? China Tour for $1,399 Air China flights from L.A. to Beijing, all local transportation, 10 nights in four- and five-star hotels (three in Beijing, two in Xi'an, one in Hangzhou, two in Suzhou, and two in Shanghai), all meals, and an English-speaking guide throughout. Itinerary includes visits to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Terra Cotta Warriors, as well as an acrobatic show and a cruise on the Grand Canal.

anonymous -- i don't think i'd want to take so little time to see all those sites; i spent a full day at each of the summer palace and the forbidden city, and 2 on the great wall, and still felt i cold have spent more time on them. the price is quite good though, assuming that it includes airfare.

anonymousone, I did that tour only I originated fron Shanghai, but hit all the cities on your itinerary. 4 star hotels are ok by China standards.I took a bus everywhere on this tour besides the flying sections.Taking the bus was great as I was the only white guy on it and really got to experience not only the land but also how everyday working Chinese got to travel. Suzhou was my hilite. The only guide that spoke English was the one in Xi'an. Gotta watch yourself in that city as well. Other times That I have travelled in China my wife and I just bought tickets and hoped on a plane, bus or train and just went.Helps though that she is native.

"is anything in Mongolia worth seeing" it's gorgeous countryside, but little else. are you talking about inner or outer mongolia? i know there are tourist type package deals for inner mongolia that involve sleeping in yurts and horseback riding, etc.
