Event:    New York Jets vs Kansas City Chiefs on 09/11/2005 at 10:00

Condition:    Kansas City Chiefs

Promotion:    Now we have a lot of respect for what Herm Edwards has done since taking over the Jets as no coach in football gets more out of his players than he does. That being said, this looks like a VERY difficult opening assignment. The Chiefs fell to 7-9 last season after having the best record in the AFC two years ago, but they have a chance to be even better than the 2003 team this year. Kansas City FINALLY addressed some needs of a defense that has not stopped anyone for the last three years, bringing in no fewer than four new playmakers. The offense is as solid as ever, and the experience running back Larry Johnson gained by admirably filling in for Priest Holmes the second half of last year instantly gives the Chiefs some nice added depth. If the defense improves as expected, this team is capable of going VERY far this season. The Jets were just two missed Doug Brien field goals away from reaching the AFC Championship Game last season, but this is not a team without holes. Yes rookie kicker Mike Nugent out of Ohio State should be an upgrade, but the receiving corps is still questionable unless Laveranues Coles remembers where the end zone is. He did catch 90 passes for Washington last season, but scored just one touchdown. The Jets are also thin in the secondary, and running back Curtis Martin may get fewer breathers now that LaMont Jordan has left to become the starter in Oakland.

The Chiefs look unstoppable this year. Even though the jets lost big today, I still predict them to be one of the top teams in the afc.
