College football trends (9/21-9/24)  September 17, 2005 
 
Ohio State plays its fourth straight home game Saturday when it opens the Big-10 season versus Iowa. The Buckeyes have had this game circled on their calendars since getting blown out at Iowa City last year, 33-7.
Ohio State had won seven straight and cashed five in a row versus the Hawkeyes before that embarrassing rout. Iowa has been the best spread team in the country the last three seasons. However, the school fares much better at home (18-3 against the spread) than on the highway (11-7-1 ATS). The Hawkeyes have 'covered' at a 9-4-1 clip as conference road dogs.

Trends and angles for the entire Week 4 schedule appear below.

BOWLING GREEN at BOISE ST

Bowling Green has won 11 of its last 14 non-conference tests (9-2 ATS). The Falcons have also cashed eight of their last 12 in September after coming up short in their first two tries this year. Boise State has won 24 straight at home (15-8 ATS). The Broncos have won six straight and cashed five of seven before a bye while BGSU is 2-5 ATS following a week of rest.

AIR FORCE at UTAH

Air Force has cashed eight of its last nine conference road openers. The Falcons have also come away with the money in 12 of their last 13 on artificial turf and 'covered' 28 of 41 as dogs. Utah has dropped six of the last eight series meetings ATS. Utah and Air Force have combined to average 75.8 points per game in the last four meetings since 2001.

IOWA ST at ARMY

Iowa State has cashed 21 of its last 31 following a straight up victory. The Cyclones have stumbled at a 3-17-1 clip on artificial turf. Army is 4-8-1 ATS as a double-digit home dog.

CALIFORNIA at NEW MEXICO ST

California is 13-3-1 ATS on grass. New Mexico State has 'covered' six of its last eight as home dogs of seven points or more and five of its last six versus Pac-10 competition.

GEORGIA TECH at VIRGINIA TECH

Georgia Tech is 12-4 as a road dog in conference play. Virginia Tech has slipped in nine of its last 14 ATS in home conference games. The Hokies have cashed 12 of 16 as single-digit home favorites.

PURDUE at MINNESOTA

Purdue is just 8-18-2 ATS on the road in the Big-10. The Boilers have also come up short in eight of 12 on artificial turf. Minnesota is 2-9-1 ATS versus Purdue. The Gophers have also floundered in 15 of their last 24 home conference battles ATS.

PENN STATE at NORTHWESTERN

Penn State has stumbled in 10 of its last 12 conference openers ATS. The home team has seized the cheddar in six of the last eight series scrapes.

MICHIGAN STATE at ILLINOIS

Michigan State has won and 'covered' nine of its last 11 against Illinois. The Spartans have lost 22 of their last 31 on the road in conference play (12-18-1 ATS).

BC at CLEMSON

Boston College has come up short in six of its last nine conference road openers ATS. The Eagles are 16-9 ATS after a SU loss should they have failed versus Florida State last week.

LOUISVILLE at SOUTH FLORIDA

Louisville is 11-5 as conference road favorites. The Cardinals have also cashed 32 of 51 after a SU win.

MARYLAND at WAKE FOREST

Maryland has won and covered the last six series meetings. The Terrapins are 18-10 ATS on the road in conference play. The home team has 'covered' in seven of the last 11 series fracases.

GEORGIA at MISSISSIPPI STATE

Georgia has won 14 of its last 19 against Mississippi State in this battle of the Bulldogs. Georgia is 2-8 ATS before a bye. Mississippi State has slipped in nine of its last 12 ATS against teams from the SEC-East.

WMU at TEMPLE

Western Michigan is 4-9 ATS on grass.

EMU at CMU

Eastern Michigan has 'covered' 10 of its last 12 MAC openers on the road. The Eagles are 5-9-1 SU versus Central Michigan while cashing at a 11-4 clip. The underdog has barked in 11 of the last 15 series squabbles.

DUKE at VIRGINIA

Duke has lost nine of its last 11 against Virginia, but cashed at an 8-3 clip. The Cavaliers are 10-5 as conference home favorites.

KENT STATE at OHIO U.

The SU winner has won by double-digits in seven of the last eight series battles. Kent State has cashed in six of its last eight on the road in MAC warfare and at a 10-5-1 clip in its last 16 chances. Ohio is 7-3, both SU and ATS, prior to a bye.

TCU at BYU

BYU is just 10-21 ATS following a SU win and 3-7 ATS after a week off. TCU is 5-10-1 ATS on the conference road.

ECU at WEST VIRGINIA

East Carolina has lost 14 of its last 16 against West Virginia and dropped the last four ATS. The Mountaineers are 2-8 in their last 10 as home favorites. They have cashed at a 5-2-1 clip in Morgantown against the Pirates.

ARKANSAS at ALABAMA The home team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven series showcases. The SU winner has cashed in the last 14 meetings. The Crimson Tide has floundered in 12 of its last 15 SEC tests at home.

FLORIDA at KENTUCKY

Florida has won its last 18 against Kentucky (11-7 ATS). The Wildcats have lost 17 straight SEC openers (4-7 ATS last 11).

NORTH CAROLINA at NC STATE

North Carolina has won and 'covered' nine of its last 12 against North Carolina State. The underdog has barked in nine of the last 13 meetings. The Wolf Pack is 2-9 ATS following a SU win.

NOTRE DAME at WASHINGTON

Notre Dame is 19-10 ATS versus the Pac-10. Washington has lost five straight and dropped three straight ATS versus the Irish.

COLORADO at MIAMI

Colorado has cashed 16 of its last 24 as road underdogs. However, the Buffaloes have dropped 21 of their last 31 ATS outside the Big-12. Miami has won 20 of its last 23 home openers (11-6-1 ATS). The Canes' have also clicked in 15 of their last 17 regular season challenges versus the Big-12.

MARSHALL at UCF

The visitor has cashed in the last three series battles. Central Florida is 4-10 ATS in its last 14 home games.

USC at OREGON

Oregon has 'covered' 15 of its last 19 conference openers in Eugene. USC has cashed seven of its last 11 against the Ducks and 23 of its last 32 in the Pac-10. The visiting team has held sway in seven of the last eight encounters.

WYOMING at OLE MISS

Wyoming upset Mississippi last year for its first win ever versus the SEC. The Cowboys had lost 28 of their last 31 on the road pending the result of Saturday's game at Air Force.

NIU at AKRON

Akron has lost six of its last nine home openers, but it has cashed six of the nine. The Zips are 15-8 as home dogs. They have flopped in 13 of their last 18 ATS against foes from the MAC-West.

SO. MISS at HOUSTON

Southern Mississippi has won five of its last six as road favorites. The Golden Eagles have also prevailed in six of their last eight conference games on the road (7-1 ATS). Conversely, Houston has fallen short in 13 of its last 15 as home dogs (6-9 ATS), and it has lost seven of its last nine C-USA openers, both SU and ATS.

MEMPHIS at TULSA

Memphis has lost 17 of its last 26 following a SU win. The Tigers are 6-12 SU and ATS on the road in conference play. Tulsa is 2-7 SU and ATS in its last nine conference openers. The home team is 0-7-1 ATS in this C-USA rivalry.

TENNESSEE at LSU

LSU has won four straight against Tennessee, including the SEC championship game in 2001. The Tigers are 10-2-1 ATS in their conference opener, but just 10-17-1 ATS following a bye. The Volunteers are 9-5 SU, though only 5-9 ATS versus SEC-West rivals.

MICHIGAN at WISCONSIN

Michigan has won eight of its last 10 against Wisconsin, but it has come up on the short end in seven of the 10 ATS. The Wolverines have lost six of their last seven Big-10 road openers (0-7 ATS). The Badgers are 13-7 as conference home dogs and 10-4 ATS in loop opening games.

SAN JOSE ST at SAN DIEGO ST

San Jose State hasn't won at San Diego since 1952. San Diego State has won and cashed five of its last seven as home chalk. The Aztecs have won and 'covered' four straight versus the Spartans.

NAVY at RICE

Navy is 20-10 ATS after taking a week off. The Midshipmen have cashed seven straight in the state of Texas since 1970. Rice has 'covered' in five of the last seven series skirmishes and it is 19-5-1 ATS as home dogs. The visiting team has won five of the last seven spread decisions.

TULANE at SMU

Tulane has won its last three against SMU by double-digits and hasn't lost in Dallas since 1977. The Mustangs have cashed five of their last seven at home in conference play. The Green Wave have won and 'covered' five of the last six meetings.

UNLV at UTAH ST

UNLV has lost six of its last nine, but cashed seven of nine, the week after facing Nevada. Utah State is 11-5 ATS after a bye.

NEW MEXICO at UTEP

The visiting team is 4-8 ATS in this non-conference rivalry, though the road team has cashed three of the last four.

NEVADA at COLORADO ST

Nevada has lost nine straight road openers. The Wolf Pack has also lost seven straight to Colorado State (4-2 ATS). The Rams have won 11 of their last 14 home openers, failing at a 3-8-1 clip ATS.

ARIZONA ST at OREGON ST

The visiting team has failed to cash in the last seven series battles. Arizona State has failed in 12 of its last 16 on the road in Pac-10 play. Oregon State is 2-15-1 SU against the Sun Devils since 1983. The Beavers are 21-7 ATS at home against conference foes.

HAWAII at IDAHO

Hawaii has lost nine of its last 11 and come up short in 10 of 11 ATS on the mainland. Idaho, playing its first game as a member of the WAC, is 2-12 ATS as favorites.
